Perspective Switch Slides Geometry: Trigonometry
Perspective Switch
Opposite, Adjacent, and the Power of Choice
Warm-Up: Stand & Point
Round 1: Angle A
Point to the wall Opposite the teacher's corner.
Round 2: Angle B
The teacher moves. Point to the New Opposite wall.
Did the walls move?
No, but your Perspective did.
The Ancient Code: SOH CAH TOA
SOH
SINE
Opposite / Hypotenuse
CAH
COSINE
Adjacent / Hypotenuse
TOA
TANGENT
Opposite / Adjacent

The "Big Flip"
Let's analyze what we just saw in the video.
Question 1
Why did Sin M equal Cos P ?
Hint: Look at the side names.
Question 2
Which side never changed, no matter the perspective?
Hint: It's always across from the right angle.
Activity
"Perspective Switch"
1 Partner Up
Find a teammate and label yourselves Partner A and Partner B.
2 Solve Ratios
Partner A solves for Angle A. Partner B solves for Angle B.
The Challenge
"Compare your answers. Write one sentence explaining why the numbers are the same, but in different spots."
Sentence Share
Who has a sentence that clearly explains the switch ? Be ready to read yours to the class!

Activity Instructions
Decide who is Partner A and who is Partner B . For each triangle, find the requested ratios using SOH CAH TOA . When you both finish a triangle, compare your answers.
Triangle #1: Triangle MNP Integer Triple: 3, 4, 5
M N P 4 3 5
Partner A: Angle N
sin(N) =
cos(N) =
tan(N) =
Partner B: Angle P
sin(P) =
cos(P) =
tan(P) =
Triangle #2: Triangle XYZ Integer Triple: 5, 12, 13
X Y Z 5 12 13
Partner A: Angle X
sin(X) =
cos(X) =
tan(X) =
Partner B: Angle Z
sin(Z) =
cos(Z) =
tan(Z) =
The Perspective Synthesis
Compare your answers for Triangle #1 and Triangle #2. What did you notice about the values?
Work together to write one complete sentence explaining why the numbers in your columns matched up (or didn't) in the way they did. Focus on the words Opposite and Adjacent .
"Our perspective changes, but the triangle stays the same."

Perspective Switch: Trig Ratios
Lesson Duration 45-50 Min
Learning Objective
Students will understand that trigonometric ratios depend on the angle of perspective and will demonstrate how 'Opposite' and 'Adjacent' switch when the reference angle changes.
Materials Needed
Perspective Switch Slides
Perspective Switch Worksheet (1 per student)
YouTube Video (Justin's Geometry)
Calculators (optional for decimals)
Facilitation Guide
5 min
Warm-up: Stand & Point
This activity physically demonstrates perspective. When you move corners, the "opposite" wall changes. Emphasize that the room didn't change, but their position relative to the wall did.
10 min
Video Viewing
Watch the segment (5:10-9:47). Ask students to focus specifically on when Justin relabels the triangle for Angle P.
Teacher Tip: Pause at 8:35 and ask the class to predict how the labels will change before Justin reveals them.
10 min
The "Big Flip" Discussion
Discuss why \(\sin M = \cos P\).
Why did the numbers flip? (Because what was 'Opposite' for M is now 'Adjacent' for P).
What happens to Tangent? (It becomes the reciprocal).
15 min
Main Activity: Perspective Switch
Students work in pairs. Encourage them to talk through the labeling process out loud before writing the fractions.
Worksheet Answer Key
Triangle #1 (3, 4, 5) MNP
Angle N
sin(N) = 3/5
cos(N) = 4/5
tan(N) = 3/4
Angle P
sin(P) = 4/5
cos(P) = 3/5
tan(P) = 4/3
Triangle #2 (5, 12, 13) XYZ
Angle X
sin(X) = 12/13
cos(X) = 5/13
tan(X) = 12/5
Angle Z
sin(Z) = 5/13
cos(Z) = 12/13
tan(Z) = 5/12
Anticipated Synthesis Responses
"The side that is opposite Angle A is adjacent to Angle B. Because the labels for opposite and adjacent swap, the sine and cosine values swap as well."
Differentiation
Support
Provide students with "SOH CAH TOA" stickers or a desk-mate guide. Have students use different colored highlighters to mark 'Opposite' and 'Adjacent' for each perspective before solving.
