Say: "Mathematicians, today we are Number Bond Detectives! We are going to put two parts together to discover the whole. Look at Card A. We see 5 blue dots in a row. Do we need to count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5? Absolutely not! We trust the 5. Put your hand on your head and say '5!' Now tap your fingers: '6, 7!' What is the total? Seven!"

Teacher Tip: Watch for students counting from 1. Prompt them to cover the 5-group with their palm and say "Start with 5!"

2 Teacher Modeling ("I Do" Script • Slide 3 • Minutes 5–9) Concept Formation

Read the Story: "5 blue butterflies land on a bluebonnet. 3 orange butterflies join them. How many butterflies in all?"

Connecting Pictures to the Bond: Point to the 5 blue butterflies. Write 5 in the first part circle. Point to the 3 orange butterflies. Write 3 in the second part circle. "The parts are 5 and 3."

Modeling the Count-On Action: "We start with the bigger part: 5. Put 5 in your brain. Show 3 fingers for the other part. Count on: 6... 7... 8! The whole is 8! 5 plus 3 equals 8."
