Story Problem Modeling
Empowering young mathematicians to move beyond blind number picking by transforming playful narratives into mental movies, concrete ten-frame models, and formal equations.
Primary Goal
Translate joining and separating word problems within 10/20 into dual representations: 10-frames and number sentences.

1 Picture the Site
Close eyes. Visualize characters and the action (Are they arriving to help, or packing up to leave?).
2 Draft the Blueprint
Place first group of counters in ten-frame. Add second color for joining, or slide counters off for separating.
3 Construct Equation
Write numbers directly beneath models. Match the action sign (+ or −) and solve total.
Instructional Delivery (Phases 1 & 2)
Phase 1: Architect Roll Call & The Mental Movie (10 min) Warm-Up
Gather on the rug. Put on imaginary "Architect Hard Hats." Read a dramatic mini-scenario aloud: "4 beavers are carrying logs. 3 more beavers march over with hard hats. How many beavers in all?" Prompt: "Freeze! What movie is playing in your head? Who is moving? Are we gathering more workers, or are workers going home?" Have students show thumbs up/down for joining vs. separating.
Phase 2: Guided Blueprinting with Slide Deck (15 min) Direct Instruction
Display Story Blueprint Slides. Demonstrate Problem 1 (Fox Tree Fort: Joining) using two-color magnetic ten-frame counters. Emphasize row filling (top row of 5 first). Model explicit self-talk: "I place 3 blue counters for the first builders. When 4 more arrive, I switch to yellow counters. I see 5 on top and 2 below—that's 7! Now my equation: 3 + 4 = 7." Repeat with Problem 2 (Crane Demolition: Separating), demonstrating physically sliding counters away from the frame.
Pro-Tip for Primary Teachers: Never teach "key words" (like "in all always means add"). Instead, anchor meaning in the concrete physical action: Are groups joining together, or is a part breaking away?

Phases 3–5 & Differentiation Guide
Phase 3: Partner Studio: Blueprint Match Game (15 min) Collaborative
Architect pairs receive the Blueprint Match Game deck. Player 1 flips a Story Mission Card and reads it aloud. Player 2 finds the matching Ten-Frame Blueprint. Together, they locate or write the corresponding Equation Card to complete the "Job Site Trio." Rotate roles every card.
Phase 4: Independent Drafting & Studio Time (15 min) Independent
Students transition to desks with the Number Builder Worksheet. Students read each problem, draw quick sketches (circles or tallies) in the draft box, fill ten-frames with pencil counters, and write complete number sentences. Teacher conducts quick desk conferences with clipboards.
Phase 5: Architect Showcase & Exit Debrief (5 min) Closure
Gather at rug. Highlight 2 student work samples (one addition, one subtraction). Ask: "How did our ten-frame blueprint make the mystery answer obvious before we even wrote the numbers?" Have all students whisper their proudest "Architect Strategy" to a neighbor.

- Keep totals within 6–10.
- Provide physical two-color foam counters directly on the paper.
- Use pre-colored ten-frames so student only counts and records.
On-Level (Grade 1)
- Solve joining and separating problems up to 10 and 15.
- Sketch two distinct symbols (e.g., circles vs. Xs) in ten-frames.
- Write standard equation: \(a + b = c\) or \(a - b = c\).
Extension / Tier 1+
- Double ten-frames with sums up to 20.
