1
Warm-up: The Un-Standards (5 Minutes)
"If you had to measure your desk using only items from your backpack, what would you use?"
Have students shout out funny non-standard units (e.g., gum wrappers, mechanical pencils, juice boxes). Ask: What happens if my mechanical pencil is longer than yours?
2
Video Investigation (5 Minutes)
Play the Math Antics video. Focus specifically on 2:11-2:35 for the "Bureau of Weights and Measures" skit to set the tone for the activity.
Key Quote
"Hot dogs and donuts aren't very consistent... unless you and I are using exactly the same ones."
Key Concept
Quantify: Expressing a property as a number.
3
Main Event: World of Wacky Weights (30 Minutes)
Students choose between writing a Short Story or creating a Comic Strip about a society with no standard measurement units.
The Conflict Requirement:
Their story MUST feature a failure or conflict caused by non-standard units.
Examples: A bridge gap too wide, a recipe explosion, shoes that only fit one foot.
Encourage them to use Colored Pencils for the comic illustrations to make their "Wacky World" vibrant.
4
Closure: The Moral of the Measurement (5 Minutes)
"Standardization saves lives (and bridges)."
Briefly have 2-3 students share their "Conflict." Ask the class: What would happen if doctors didn't use standardized measurements for medicine?
Discussion Anchors
Standardization (1:53)
Why do scientists in different countries need to use the same units? What would happen if they didn't?
Base 10 (3:23)
Why does Rob say the Metric System is like our number system? How does that make math easier?

The Problem: Chaos
Without standardization, we have measurement mayhem:
- Blueprints don't match.
- Recipes fail.
- Scientific data is useless.
AGENT LOG 042:
"If the unit isn't consistent, the result is just a random number. We can't build a world on random numbers."
The Solution: Metric
Base 10
SI System
1000x Kilo
100x Hecto
10x Deka
BASE Meter
1/10 Deci
1/100 Centi
1/1000 Milli
Standardization means the world speaks the same language of length and mass.
World of Wacky Weights
Your Creative Mission
The Prompt
Write a Short Story or draw a Comic Strip about a world where people use whatever they want to measure.
Required Conflict:
Your story must feature a disaster caused by a lack of standard units!
Wacky Conflict Ideas:
Bridge Builders: Large vs. Small Pizzas
The Baker: Teaspoons vs. Soup Ladles
The Cobbler: Tiny vs. Giant Feet
Mission Accomplished
"Standardization saves lives (and bridges)."
Final Debrief:
What would happen if doctors didn't use standardized measurements for medicine?
