What is an Angle? An angle is formed when two rays meet at a shared corner point called a vertex .
Benchmark: 90° Square Corner
Meet the 4 Angle Types:
Acute
“A-cute little angle”
Smaller than 90°
Like a slice of pizza!
Right
“Square Corner (L)”
Exactly 90°
Like the corner of a book!
Obtuse
“Wide open door”
Greater than 90°
Like a recliner chair!
Straight
“Flat Line”
Exactly 180°
Like a straight flat ruler!
1 Guided Practice: Use Your Corner Test! Tip: Test each corner like an “L”
Look at each angle below. Compare it to a 90° square corner. Write Acute , Right , Obtuse , or Straight on the line.
Angle A
Angle B
Angle C
Angle D

Day 1 • Part 2
Lines in Action: Parallel, Perpendicular & Intersecting
Name:
Meet the 3 Types of Line Relationships:
Parallel Lines
“Railroad Tracks”
Lines that stay the same distance apart and NEVER touch .
Perpendicular Lines
“Square Crossroads (+)”
Lines that cross at a 90° right angle .
Intersecting Lines
“Letter X / Scissors”
Lines that cross each other at any point.
Day 1 Rule: All perpendicular lines are intersecting lines (they cross!), but they are extra special because they form square 90° corners !
3 Identify the Line Relationship Write: Parallel, Perpendicular, or Intersecting

2. Two perpendicular streets:
3. Two intersecting streets (not 90°):

Day 1 Guide
Worksheet & Exit Ticket
Suggested Day 1 Lesson Flow (45 Minutes)
1. Hook & Arms (8 min): Use arms to make acute (small), right (L-shape), obtuse (wide), and straight (flat).
2. Page 1 Angles (15 min): Direct teach 4 families. Model the “Index Card Test” on Angles A–D.
3. Page 2 Lines (15 min): Teach railroad (||), crossroads (+), and scissors (X). Complete street map.
4. Exit Ticket (7 min): Independent formative check. Quick feedback before dismissal.
Page 1 Solutions: Discovering Angles
Activity 1: Corner Test
• Angle A: Right Angle (exactly 90° square corner)
• Angle B: Acute Angle (smaller than 90°)
• Angle C: Obtuse Angle (opens wider than 90°)
• Angle D: Straight Angle (forms a flat 180° line)
Activity 2: Clock Hands
• 3:00: Right Angle (square 3-hour gap = 90°)
• 1:00: Acute Angle (narrow opening = 30°)
• 5:00: Obtuse Angle (wide opening = 150°)
Page 2 Solutions: Line Relationships
Activity 3: Line Pairs
• Pair 1: Parallel Lines (never touch)
• Pair 2: Perpendicular Lines (square 90° box)
• Pair 3: Intersecting Lines (cross at slant)
Activity 4: Street Map
• 1. Parallel: Oak St and Pine St
• 2. Perpendicular: Main Ave & Oak St (or Pine St)
• 3. Intersecting: Trail Way & Oak St (or Main/Pine)
Exit Ticket Quick Key
Q1: C (Obtuse)
Wider than the dashed 90° corner.
Q2: Letter H
Crossbar meets vertical bars at 90°.
Q3: B (Parallel)
Railroad tracks that never touch.
Q4: Parallel Lines
Any two lines drawn side-by-side.
Day 1 Teacher Tip: The Index Card Corner Tool
Give each student a 3×5 inch index card on Day 1. Have them write “90° Right Angle” in the corner. As they complete the worksheet, have them physically align the corner of their index card with each printed angle. If the ray hides behind the card → Acute . If it lines up exactly → Right . If it sticks out past the card → Obtuse !
