STEP 2
The Near-Doubles Secret: Doubles Plus 1
Adjacent Addends Strategy
The Problem
7 + 8 = ?
Look closely: 8 is just 7 + 1 ! You already know double 7!
1. Think of the double: 7 + 7 = 14
2. Add the extra 1: 14 + 1 = 15
So, 7 + 8 = 15!
Try It Together
8 + 9 = ?
A What is double 8? 16
B Add 1 more to 16: 17
Final Answer
8 + 9 = 17
Superhero Rule: When numbers sit next to each other on the number line, double the smaller number and add 1!
STEP 3
Using Doubles to Subtract!
Think-Addition Strategy
Pure Double Subtraction
14 − 7 = ?
Turn it around! Ask: “7 plus what mystery twin equals 14?”
Think: 7 + 7 = 14
So: 14 − 7 = 7
Half of 14 is 7!
Near-Double Subtraction
15 − 7 = ?
Think about the closest double you know: 14 is 7 + 7 .
Since 7 + 7 = 14
Then 7 + 8 = 15
Therefore: 15 − 7 = 8!
Teacher Cue: Ask students: “If 16 − 8 = 8, what must 17 − 8 equal?” (Answer: 9!)

BONDS
Number Bonds: The 9-Plus Trick
9 only ever needs 1!
Problem A
9 + 6 = ?
Borrow 1 from the 6 so 9 becomes 10!
Split 6 into: 1 and 5
9 + 1 = 10
10 + 5 = 15
9 + 6 = 15
Problem B
9 + 7 = ?
Borrow 1 from the 7 so 9 becomes 10!
Split 7 into: 1 and 6
9 + 1 = 10
10 + 6 = 16
9 + 7 = 16
Pattern Alert: 9 + 4 = 13 • 9 + 5 = 14 • 9 + 6 = 15 • 9 + 7 = 16 • 9 + 8 = 17! The ones digit is always 1 less!

Subtraction Strategy
The Subtraction Challenge
13 − 5 = ?
Take away in two easy jumps! Stop at 10 on your way down.
Jump 1: Take away 3 to get to 10:
13 − 3 = 10
Jump 2: Since we need to subtract 5, subtract 2 more:
10 − 2 = 8
13 − 5 = 8
Try It: 15 − 8 = ?
15 − 8 = ?
