Garden Path Explorers: Fine Motor Activity
Activity Overview
In this "Write-the-Room" activity, students act as "Garden Explorers" searching for path cards hidden around the classroom. Each card tasks them with drawing a specific line or shape on their recording sheet, strengthening pencil control and visual-motor integration.
Preparation Steps

Print & Cut: Print the Garden Path Task Cards. Cut them out and laminate for durability.

Hide Cards: Tape the cards at eye level around the room. Some can be easy to find, while others can be "hidden" in the reading nook or near the cubbies.

Gather Supplies: Provide each student with an Explorer Recording Sheet, a clipboard, and a pencil or washable marker.
Facilitation Tips
Demonstration
Show students how to find a card, look at the number, find the matching box on their sheet, and draw the line. "Look at the Ant Path! It goes straight. Can you draw a straight line in box 1?"
Verbal Cues
Use directional language: "Start at the top," "Go around and close the circle," "Zig-zag up and down!" This helps build spatial awareness.
Differentiation
For students needing support:
Pre-trace the lines/shapes in yellow highlighter on their recording sheets so they can follow the path while they hunt.
For students needing a challenge:
Ask them to draw the object from the card (e.g., the sun or the snail) alongside the line/shape in the box.
