Pattern Detectives Teacher Guide Pattern Detectives
Kindergarten Early Math • Algebraic Thinking
60-Minute Lesson
CCSS: K.MD.B.3 • K.G.B.4
Target Concept
Repeating Patterns: AB, AAB, ABC
Core Manipulatives
Snap Cubes, Pattern Blocks, Dot Stickers
Key Vocabulary
Pattern, Core, Repeat, Predict, Next
Learning Objectives (SWBAT)
Identify and name the repeating "core" in AB, AAB, and ABC sequences.
Predict and place the next 2-3 items in an established pattern.
Translate patterns between body rhythms, colors, and physical shapes.
Essential Questions
How can we tell if a row of objects is a true pattern or just random?
How does knowing the "secret rule" help us guess what comes next?
Where do we hear or see repeating patterns in everyday life?
Instructional Flow & Pacing

Teach (15m) Case File Clues
Guided (10m) Partner Train Build
Centers (15m) 3 Detective Stations
Wrap (10m) Mystery Badge Check
1. Detective Academy Warm-Up: Rhythm Clapping (10 mins)
Gather students on the rug. Put on your imaginary "detective hat and badge." Whisper: "Detectives! Someone left a secret rhythmic code on the carpet. Listen carefully and copy me: Clap, Pat, Clap, Pat, Clap, Pat..."
Pause abruptly on "Clap." Ask: "What sound MUST come next to keep the secret code alive?" Students shout: "Pat!" Explain the Detective Rule : A pattern is a sequence that repeats over and over in the exact same order.
2. Explicit Teaching: The Repeating "Core" (15 mins)
Display big colored magnets on the whiteboard: Red, Blue, Red, Blue, Red. Use yarn or a dry-erase circle to loop the first pair: "This is the CORE! It is the seed that grows the whole pattern."
Introduce Pattern Types :
• AB (Two Step) : Star, Circle, Star, Circle
• AAB (Double Step) : Bear, Bear, Duck, Bear, Bear, Duck
• ABC (Three Step) : Square, Triangle, Circle, Square, Triangle, Circle

Center Stations & Implementation Guide
Phase 3 & 4
1
Cube Train Depot
Students draw a task card and snap colored unifix cubes to build matching AB and AAB trains, extending each train by at least 6 cubes.
Materials: Snap Cubes, Task Strips
2
Bead Necklace Lab
Stringing large pony beads onto pipe cleaners. Learners choose an ABC pattern rule (e.g., Red-Yellow-Blue) and chant it aloud as they string.
Materials: Pipe Cleaners, Jumbo Beads
3
Pattern Fix-It
"Someone broke the code!" Strips with one deliberate error (e.g., Circle, Square, Circle, Circle, Triangle). Students spot the broken link and fix it.
Materials: Bug-eye glasses, error cards
Differentiation Strategies
Support & Intervention
Restrict to AB high-contrast colors (e.g., Black & White, Red & Green). Use physical rhythm (clap/slap) before manipulatives. Provide pre-grooved sorting trays.
On-Level Mastery
Complete AB, AAB, and ABC strips. Have students circle the repeating core with yarn or dry-erase markers to demonstrate conceptual understanding.
Extension & Challenge
Introduce ABCD or ABBC structures. Prompt students to transfer a visual color pattern into sound (stomp, clap, snap) or movement (jump, duck, wiggle).
Common Pitfalls & Teacher Fixes
• Stopping after one repetition: Students build AB and stop, thinking it's done.
↳ Prompt: "A pattern never quits after one round! Let's chant it again to see what comes next."
• Color confusion in AAB: Forgetting the double item (e.g., doing Red-Blue instead of Red-Red-Blue).
↳ Prompt: "Say the twins! Bear, Bear... who comes to visit? Duck!"
Formative Observation Checklist (Exit Criteria)
1. Emerging (1 pt) Identifies that an alternating sequence exists; needs direct guidance to verbalize or extend the next element.
2. Proficient (2 pts) Consistently names the pattern rule (AB, AAB, ABC) and correctly extends 3+ iterations independently.
3. Advanced (3 pts) Creates original multi-element patterns and translates patterns across multiple modalities (visual to audio).
