- Crayons / Markers
- Space for student movement
1. Simon Says (Warm-up)
5 MIN
Lead the class in math-themed Simon Says to introduce the physical sensation of addition vs. subtraction.
Addition Action
"Make yourself BIG!" (Arms out, stand on tiptoes). Explain: We are getting more.
Subtraction Action
"Shrink way DOWN!" (Crouch small). Explain: We are taking away.
2. Video Discussion
5 MIN
Watch from 1:22. Focus on the concept of "taking away" fruit.
Stop at 1:45:
"Why did the narrator cross out the blueberries? What word tells us to do that?"
Stop at 2:08:
"If I ate 3 blueberries, do I have more or less than before?"
3. Acting Out Arithmetic
15 MIN
Setup: Invite 5 students to the front. They are "blueberries."
"We have 5 sweet blueberries. They are sitting in our basket (the front of the room). But then, a hungry bear comes along and eats 2 of them! (Tap 2 students to sit down). Class, how many blueberries are left standing?"
Variety: Repeat with different totals (4-1, 3-2, 5-4). Let students choose which fruit they want to be.
4. Drawing Story
5 MIN
Pass out the Berry Story Sketchpad. Ask students to draw their own subtraction story. They should draw the starting amount, put an "X" through the ones "eaten," and circle the ones left.
