One More Hop Lesson Plan
Standard: CCSS K.CC.4c
Duration: 40–45 Mins
Core Concept
Each successive counting number is exactly 1 more than the previous number (1 to 10).
Manipulatives
Hop Track Math Tool, green frog counters/connecting cubes, giant floor number line.
Sentence Frame
"I have ___. One more is ___!"
"I Can" Statements
- I can show what happens when I add 1 more to any group of objects up to 9.
- I can use my Hop Track to move forward 1 spot to find the next number.
- I can say the pattern: "1 more than 1 is 2, 1 more than 2 is 3..." up to 10.
Stage 1
Circle Time Warm-Up: The Frog Hop Chant (8 Mins)
Physical Movement Hook: Lay a tape number path (1–10) on the carpet. Invite one student to stand on pad 1.
🗣️ Whole-Group Call & Response:
"Little green froggy sitting on the run, what is ONE MORE than number ONE?"
Class shouts: "HOP to TWO!" (Child takes one big jump forward onto 2!)
Repeat with volunteers from 2 up to 5, then 6 up to 10. Emphasize physical body motion: "One more always means taking exactly ONE hop forward!"
Stage 2
CRA Guided Instruction: Hands on the Hop Track (14 Mins)
C Concrete (Cubes & Frogs)
Distribute the Hop Track Math Tool and counting cubes.
- Tell students: "Build a tower of 3 cubes."
- Teacher: "Now give it ONE MORE cube. Snap it on top!"
- Ask: "How many cubes now? Count together: 1, 2, 3, 4!"
- Anchor phrase: "3 and 1 more makes 4!"
R Representational (Track Path)
Transition to the lily-pad linear number track.
- Students place their frog counter on Lily Pad 4.
- Slide the frog 1 leap right: "One hop forward lands on... 5!"
- Pair with ten-frame strip: shade 4 dots, then add 1 more dot in a contrasting color.

One More (1 to 10)
Stage 3
Hands-On Practice Centers (12 Mins)
Center 1: Tower Builders
Student rolls a 1–6 or 1–9 dot die. Builds a cube tower with that count. Grabs one red cube (1 more), attaches it, counts total, and records on whiteboard.
Focus: Concrete addition
Center 2: Lily Pad Leap
Partners take turns drawing a number card (1–9). Partner A places frog on that number. Partner B says "One more!" and hops the frog to the answer.
Focus: Verbal fluency
Center 3: Adventure Sheet
Independent completion of the One More Adventure Worksheet. Students draw 1 more item, fill in 1 more ten-frame dot, and trace the resulting numeral.
Focus: Independent mastery
Stage 4
Check for Understanding & Exit Ticket (6 Mins)
⚡ "Finger Flash" Quick Check:
Teacher shows 4 fingers. "Show me ONE MORE than 4!" Students instantly raise 5 fingers. Quickly repeat with 2, 7, 8, and 9 to spot check whole-room fluency.
🎫 Door Pass (Verbal):
As students line up for recess or transition, teacher whispers: "What is one more than 6?" Student whispers back: "7!"
Common Kindergarten Misconceptions
❌
Recounting from 1 every time: Student counts 1, 2, 3, adds 1, then starts over from 1 to find 4.
💡 Intervention: Teach "count-on" gestures. Place a hand on the chest to hold the start number ("Lock in 3!"), then pop 1 finger up ("4!").
❌
Confusing "one more" with "just counting 1": When asked "What is 1 more than 5?", child answers "1".
💡 Intervention: Use physical track. Show that the frog does not go back to 1; it takes a step forward to the neighbor!
Targeted Support (Tier 2/3)
Limit numbers to 1 through 5 first. Use high-contrast color cubes (all red cubes + 1 green cube for "one more") so the added unit is unmistakably distinct.
Early Finisher Extension
Introduce the challenge: "What is ONE MORE than 10?" (11!). Or introduce "One Less" preview: "What happens if the frog hops backward?"
