Equal Groups with Pictures
1
What is Division?
Division means sharing items into equal groups! Every group must get the exact same amount so it is completely fair.
Total Items 6 cookies to share
÷
Equal Groups 2 plates / friends
=
In Each Group 3 fair share!
2
How to Fair Share Step-by-Step
Step 1: Count Total
Count all the items in your starting pile:
🍪🍪🍪 🍪🍪🍪
6 cookies total
Step 2: Deal Out One by One
Put 1 on Plate A, then 1 on Plate B:
Plate A
🍪 🍪 🍪
Plate B
🍪 🍪 🍪
Keep dealing until 0 left!
Step 3: Count ONE Group
How many are on just one plate ?
🍪 🍪 🍪 Count = 3
6 ÷ 2 = 3
Look at These Equal Groups:

Answers & Hands-on Support
Hands-on Scaffold for Learners New to Division:
Provide physical counters (buttons, tiles, or two-color counters) and real cups/plates matching each problem. Have the student count the total first, then deal them out: "One for this plate, one for that plate..." until their hands are empty. Then guide them to count just one plate to find the answer.

Key Questions to Ask During Practice
"How many items did we start with in all?" (Emphasizes total/dividend).
"How many boxes are we sharing into?" (Emphasizes groups/divisor).
"Does everyone have the exact same number? If one box has more, is it fair?" (Reinforces equal groups).
"Count just ONE box. What is our answer?" (Connects quotient to single group count).
Core Competency: Counts physical/visual items • Distributes items equally into groups • Writes the final equal group count
