Station Spotlights
Choose Your Tiered Challenge
🟢 Green: Foundation 🟡 Blue: Core 🟣 Purple: Challenge
Station 1
Array Architect
Build rectangular models using counters or grid paper. Label rows and columns, find total area, and test commutativity: \(a \times b = b \times a\).
Deliverable: Draw 3 arrays and write corresponding equations on page 1 of your Passport.
Station 2
Strategy Studio
Decompose tough multiplication facts using friendlier chunks (e.g., break \(7 \times 8\) into \((5 \times 8) + (2 \times 8)\)) to solve with lightning speed.
Deliverable: Show two decomposition pathways for your assigned challenge card.

Voice Level 1
Quiet table whispers only so every team can think, model, and calculate without distraction.
Ask 3 Before Me
Consult the task card, your partner, and the strategy anchor chart before asking the teacher table.
Full Accounting
Record every model and equation clearly in your Passport before rotating to the next station.

Array Architect Task Cards
Hands-On Visual Modeling
Station Goal: Build physical or drawn rectangular arrays to represent multiplication as equal rows and columns.
Station Protocol
1. Select your assigned card tier (🟢, 🟡, or 🟣). 2. Build the array with square tiles or sketch on your Passport grid. 3. Record equations, turnaround fact (commutative property), and total items.
🟢 Foundation Tier • Factors of 2, 5, 10 Card 1-A
A garden has 4 equal rows of tomato plants with 5 plants in each row .
Task 1: Build & Draw
Model the array showing rows and columns clearly.
Task 2: Write Two Equations
Write multiplication equation and commutative turnaround.
🟡 Core Tier • Factors of 3, 4, 6, 8 Card 1-B
An auditorium floor has 6 rows of chairs with 8 chairs in each row .
Task 1: Grid Area Model
Draw a \(6 \times 8\) rectangle. Split it into \(6 \times 5\) and \(6 \times 3\).
Task 2: Find Total Product
Add the two smaller areas to verify your total product.
🟣 Challenge Tier • Factors of 7, 9, 12 & Unknowns Card 1-C
A warehouse has a pallet storage zone measuring 7 rows . The total capacity is 63 pallets .
Task 1: Missing Dimension
Write an open equation: \(7 \times ? = 63\). Find columns.
Task 2: Expansion Model
If they add 3 more rows, sketch the new enlarged array.
💡 Quick Check: Ensure rows represent horizontal groups and columns represent vertical units. Station 1 of 4

Decomposition & Distributive Property
Station Goal: Break apart difficult multiplication facts into friendlier known facts using distributive logic.
Anchor Strategy: Break Apart a Factor
To calculate \(7 \times 6\), break \(7\) into \(5 + 2\). Then: \((5 \times 6) + (2 \times 6) = 30 + 12 = 42\).
🟢 Foundation Tier • Double It Strategy (×4) Card 2-A
Target Problem: Calculate \(4 \times 7\) using the "Double and Double Again" method.
Step 1: First Double
Find \(2 \times 7 = \underline{\hspace{20px}}\).
Step 2: Second Double
Double your result: \(\underline{\hspace{20px}} + \underline{\hspace{20px}} = \underline{\hspace{20px}}\).
