Number Bonds
Part + Part = Whole
๐ฏ Learning Objectives (I Can Statements)
I can decompose any whole number up to 10 into two parts using red and green apple counters.
I can record my parts and whole inside a number bond model.
I can write a matching addition equation (e.g., \(4 + 3 = 7\)) to represent my harvest.
๐ก Essential Questions & Vocabulary
"How can one whole number be broken into different pairs of parts?"
Whole Part Decompose Number Bond Equation
โฑ๏ธ Lesson Arc & Facilitation
1 Launch & Hook: The Orchard Harvest Mystery (8 Mins)
Slides 1โ3
Gather students on the rug. Reveal an apple basket with 7 apple cutouts (4 red, 3 green). Ask: "Farmer Fran picked 7 apples today. Some are red sweet apples and some are green crisp apples. How many of each could be in Fran's basket?"
Teacher Talk: "The whole is 7. We can separate our whole into two parts : red apples and green apples! Today, you are Orchard Mathematicians!"
2 Concrete Exploration: Apple Tree Mat Sorting (14 Mins)
Slides 4โ6
Students work in pairs with their Apple Tree Mat and 10 two-color counters (or red/green snap cubes). Challenge students with target numbers:
Target 6 Apples
Find 2 different ways to make 6 (e.g., 5 red & 1 green, 3 red & 3 green).
Target 8 Apples
Shake cup of 8 counters and spill onto the tree branches to see parts.
Target 10 Apples
Explore combinations of ten using the ten-frame tree basket.

Lesson Arc (Part 2)
3 Representational Bridge: Number Bonds & Equations (10 Mins)
Slides 7โ8
Transition from counters on the tree mat to drawing circles in the number bond graphic organizer on the mat.
Say & Model: "Look at our 5 red apples and 2 green apples. Our whole is 7 in the big circle. The two parts branch out: 5 and 2. 5 plus 2 equals 7!"
Turn & Talk Prompt: "Turn to your partner: If Farmer Fran turns the bond sideways, does the whole change? How do you know?"
4 Independent Application: Orchard Harvest Worksheet (12 Mins)
Student Sheet
Students transition to the Orchard Harvest Worksheet . They color apples red/green to match given totals, complete number bonds, and fill in matching addition sentences.
5 Harvest Wrap-Up & Exit Debrief (6 Mins)
Slide 9
Hold up 2 fingers on left hand and 4 on right. "Show me with thumbs up: Is 6 the whole? Yes! What are the two parts? 2 and 4!" Collect exit check on worksheet problem 6.
โ ๏ธ Common Misconceptions & Coaching Tips
Misconception: Confusing which circle is the whole when the bond is rotated or oriented sideways.
Correction: Have students follow the "branches". The whole connects to BOTH paths; parts only connect to the whole.
Misconception: Counting the total again when recording equations (e.g. thinking \(4+3=10\)).
Correction: Remind students that counters are NOT added from outside; we simply split the same group of 7.
๐ฑ Tiered Instructional Differentiation
Support / Tier 2
Restrict numbers to totals of 5 or 6. Keep counters physically placed directly inside the bond rings before writing numerals.
EL / Language
Use physical gestures: arms together for "whole", open hands splitting apart for "parts". Sentence frame: "____ and ____ make ____."
Extension / Tier 1+
Have students find all pairs that make 10 systematically (\(10+0, 9+1, 8+2...\)) and introduce subtraction relation (\(10-3=7\)).
