Step 1: The Power of Place Value
Mental Warm-Up
Break Numbers Apart
Big numbers look scary until we split them into friendly Tens and Ones.
24 = 20 + 4
13 = 10 + 3
Friendly Zero Multiplications
Multiply the base numbers first, then append the trailing zeros!
20 × 10 → 200 (2 × 1 and two zeros)
20 × 3 → 60 (2 × 3 and one zero)
Key Rule: When you break numbers into expanded form, multiplication becomes easy addition!
The Area Model: 4 Friendly Rooms
Target: 24 × 13
The 4 Partial Products:
20 × 10 = 200
4 × 10 = 40
20 × 3 = 60
4 × 3 = 12

20 × 10 200
4 × 10 40
20 × 3 60
4 × 3 12
4 Rooms = 200 + 40 + 60 + 12 Sum = 312

Row 1: Multiply the Ones
3 × 24 = 72 .
(In grid: 60 + 12 = 72)
2
Row 2: Multiply the Tens
Put the Placeholder 0 first! Then 1 × 24 = 240 .
(In grid: 200 + 40 = 240)
Golden Rule: The placeholder 0 is there because you are multiplying by 10, not 1!
Guided Practice: Let's Solve 35 × 24
Try Both Ways
Area Model
30 × 20 600
5 × 20 100
30 × 4 120
5 × 4 20
600 + 100 + 120 + 20 = 840
Standard Algorithm
² (regroup 2)
35
× 24
140 (4 × 35)
+700 (20 × 35)
840
Both methods give the exact same product: 840 !
Notice: 140 is (120 + 20) and 700 is (600 + 100). The two methods are twin sisters!

Two Powerful Tools
Area Model: Great for seeing place value clearly.
Standard Algorithm: Fast and compact when you remember the placeholder 0!
Check: Both ways always lead to the exact same product.
Exit Slip Prompt
Solve the quick check on the bottom of your worksheet using either method:
42 × 16 = ?
Outstanding work today! You have both tools in your multiplication toolbelt!

Part 1: Mental Math Warm-Up
30 × 20 = 600
40 × 10 = 400
20 × 7 = 140
50 × 30 = 1,500
Prob 1: 23 × 15 345
Area Model (4 rooms):
• 20 × 10 = 200
• 3 × 10 = 30
• 20 × 5 = 100
• 3 × 5 = 15
200+30+100+15 = 345
Prob 2: 34 × 26 884
Standard Algorithm:
Line 1: 6 × 34 = 204
Line 2: 20 × 34 = 680 (placeholder 0)
Grid check: 600+80+180+24=884
204 + 680 = 884
Prob 3: 52 × 18 936
Standard Steps:
Regroup: 1 (from 8×2=16)
Line 1: 8 × 52 = 416
Line 2: 10 × 52 = 520
416 + 520 = 936
Part 3: Word Problem (24 × 32)
Standard: 2 × 24 = 48; 30 × 24 = 720; 48 + 720 = 768 novels .
Grid: (600 + 120 + 40 + 8) = 768 graphic novels .
Either method is valid; look for correct regrouping or box alignment.
Part 4: Exit Slip (42 × 16)
Standard: Line 1 (6 × 42) = 252; Line 2 (10 × 42) = 420.
Sum: 252 + 420 = 672 .
Verify placeholder zero in row 2 of student's exit slip.
Key Misconceptions: Area Model vs. Standard Algorithm
Missing Placeholder 0: The #1 error in standard algorithm is forgetting the 0 in row 2. Explain: "We are multiplying by the tens digit, so the answer must end in zero."
Regrouping Confusion: Students often add the carried digit before multiplying (e.g. for 8 × 52, adding 1 to 5 to make 6 × 8 = 48). Remind: "Multiply first, add carried digits after!"
