Rule #1 Align Decimals
The Plumb Line Concept
In building, a plumb line hangs perfectly straight down to ensure walls don't tilt. In math, your decimal points must act as a plumb line. If they skew, the whole building collapses!

Drop Plumb Line
Write the numbers so that their decimal points are stacked in a perfect vertical line.
9.4 + 2.75 → Stacked vertically

Fill the Voids
Place placeholder zeros in any empty spaces at the end so all columns are completely filled.

Construct
Add or subtract columns from right to left. Regroup (carry or borrow) exactly like whole numbers.

Lock Foundation
Bring the decimal point straight down into your answer line to lock it in place.

Inspection Warning: Common Pitfalls
Right-Justifying: Stacking 5.2 and 1.84 by aligning the right edges. This is illegal! Decimals must align.
Phantom Subtraction: Thinking that "empty space" minus 6 is 6 (e.g., 5.2 - 1.86 = 3.46). No! You must insert a placeholder zero: 10 - 6 = 4.

Step 2: Build (15m)
Introduce the Plumb Line Checklist using the Anchor Chart. Conduct guided alignment problems on the board, specifically targeting empty spaces ("voids") with bright placeholder zeros.
Step 3: Run (20m)
Distribute the student worksheet. Monitor Section C closely; subtraction regrouping from placeholder zeros is the highest-frequency error zone in upper elementary math.
Diagnostic Guide: Misconception Codes
MC-01: Right-Alignment Collapse Student aligns the right-most digits rather than the decimals (e.g., placing the '5' in 1.25 directly under the '8' in 4.8). Fix: Have student highlight the decimal columns with a yellow marker.
MC-02: Subtraction Void Phantom In subtraction, student believes blank space minus digit equals the digit (e.g. \(7.4 - 2.15 = 5.35\) instead of \(5.25\)). Fix: Enforce the rule "Draw the helper zero before pickaxe (subtraction) touches the grid."
