The Zero Baseline
Before building any amount, clear your central workspace completely:
$0.00
Every transaction begins at zero. Never leave old coins on the table!
1 Reserve Piles
Keep coins sorted off to the side
2 Active Zone
Only coins for the current target
3 Reset First
Push all coins back after each item
Always start from an empty workspace to avoid mixing coins between transactions.
Foundation
Coin Values & Skip Rhythms
Four Coin Values
Quarter 25¢
25¢
Count by 25s:
25, 50, 75, $1.00
Dime 10¢
10¢
Count by 10s:
10, 20, 30, 40...
Nickel 5¢
5¢
Count by 5s:
5, 10, 15, 20...
Penny 1¢
1¢
Count by 1s:
1, 2, 3, 4...
Bigger coin values allow you to reach your target number with fewer physical pieces.
Part 1 • 15 Minutes
The "Skip-Counting" Drill
Slide & Speak
Nickels (5¢ each) Target: 30 Cents
5¢ 10¢ 15¢ 20¢ 25¢ 30¢
Dimes (10¢ each) Target: 80 Cents
10¢ 20¢ 30¢ 40¢ 50¢ 60¢ 70¢ 80¢
Quarters (25¢ each) Target: 1 Dollar
25¢ 50¢ 75¢ $1.00
Drill Rule: Slide one coin across your desk at the exact moment you speak the running total.
Part 2 • Core Strategy
The "Biggest Coin First" Rule
Step-by-Step Logic
The Systematic Build Rule:
Always use the largest value coin possible without exceeding your target number. When that coin is too large, step down to the next largest.
STEP 1
Quarters
Add 25¢ until the next quarter would exceed target.
STEP 2
Dimes
Add 10¢ until the next dime would exceed target.
STEP 3
Nickels
Add a 5¢ nickel if it fits without passing target.
STEP 4
Pennies
Add single 1¢ pennies to land on exact total.
Why this works: You minimize physical coins and prevent arithmetic mistakes.
Teacher Model
Building $0.68 from Zero
Target: $0.68
1. Quarters (25¢)
2 Quarters
25¢, 50¢. (A 3rd would be 75¢: too high!)
Subtotal: $0.50
2. Dimes (10¢)
1 Dime
50¢ + 10¢ = 60¢. (Another would be 70¢: stop!)
Subtotal: $0.60
3. Nickels (5¢)
1 Nickel
60¢ + 5¢ = 65¢. (Can't add another nickel.)
Subtotal: $0.65
4. Pennies (1¢)
3 Pennies
Slide 3 pennies: 66¢, 67¢, 68¢. Hit target!
Final: $0.68
Exact Combination:
2 Quarters + 1 Dime + 1 Nickel + 3 Pennies (7 coins total)
$0.68
Practice speaking aloud: "25, 50... 60... 65... 66, 67, 68."
Guided Model
Building $0.57 from Zero
Target: $0.57
1. Quarters
2 Quarters
25¢, 50¢. Need 7 more cents.
Subtotal: $0.50
2. Dimes
0 Dimes
Adding 10¢ would give 60¢ (too high! Skip).
Subtotal: $0.50
3. Nickels
1 Nickel
50¢ + 5¢ = 55¢. Fits cleanly!
Subtotal: $0.55
4. Pennies
2 Pennies
56¢, 57¢. Target reached!
Final: $0.57
Notice the Dime Skip:
If a coin is too big, move directly to the next size down!
5 Coins Total
Total verification: 25 + 25 + 5 + 1 + 1 = 57 cents.

Partner Verification Protocol
Double Check
1
Clear & Build
Partner A starts at $0.00 and builds the coin pile using the Biggest Coin First rule.
Hands off pile when done
2
Count Aloud
Partner B touches each coin one-by-one and double-counts out loud from largest to smallest.
Verify running total
3
Confirm & Swap
Confirm that the sum matches the screen target. Push all coins back to $0.00 and switch roles.
Reset back to $0.00
Counting aloud together guarantees accuracy and reinforces fast real-world arithmetic.
