Multiplying 2-Digit and 3-Digit Numbers by 1-Digit Multipliers with the Area Model
Step 1: Expand Factors
Step 2: Multiply Boxes
Step 3: Add Products
Grade 4-5 Mathematics Concept Breakdown & Practice
?
What is the Box Method?
Foundation
1. Partition
Break large numbers into expanded form by place value (hundreds, tens, ones).
48 = 40 + 8
2. Partial Products
Multiply each partition inside its own rectangle to find partial products.
6 × 40 and 6 × 8
3. Sum Together
Add all partial products together using place value alignment to get the final total.
240 + 48 = 288
Key Idea: The area of the large rectangle equals the sum of its smaller parts!
Modeling
2-Digit by 1-Digit: Setup
Problem: 6 × 43
1
Expand the 2-digit number
Look at the value of each digit:
43 = 40 + 3
2
Draw a 1 × 2 grid
Place the 1-digit factor on the left height and the expanded parts on top.
Visual Frame Setup
40 3
6
Box A 6 × 40
Box B 6 × 3
Next: Calculate inside each box and add the totals together.
Modeling
2-Digit by 1-Digit: Solve
Problem: 6 × 43
Multiply inside each box:
+40 +3
6
6 × 4 tens 240 (6 × 40)
6 × 3 ones 18 (6 × 3)
Add Partial Products
240
258
Therefore, 6 × 43 = 258
💡 Quick Check: 6 × 40 is 240, and 6 × 3 is 18. Estimating: 6 × 40 = 240. Our answer (258) is reasonable!
3-Digit Modeling
Scaling Up: 1 × 3 Grid
Problem: 7 × 354
Step 1: Partition 354 by Place Value 354 = 300 + 50 + 4
Step 2: Grid Size 1 Row × 3 Columns
300 (Hundreds) 50 (Tens) 4 (Ones)
7
7 × 300 (7 × 3 hundreds)
7 × 50 (7 × 5 tens)
7 × 4 (7 × 4 ones)
Zero Trick: For 7 × 300, think 7 × 3 = 21, then attach the two zeros to make 2,100!
3-Digit Modeling
7 × 354: Partial Products
Step 3 & 4: Multiply & Add
300 50 4
7
7 × 300 2,100
7 × 50 350
7 × 4 28
Partial Products: 2,100, 350, and 28
Line Up Places
2,100
350
2,478
7 × 354 = 2,478
Remember: Always align digits carefully by ones, tens, and hundreds before adding!
Guided Practice
Let's Try Together: 5 × 68
Whiteboards Ready!
Prompt 1: Expand
How do we partition 68?
68 = [ ___ ] + [ ___ ]
Prompt 2: Boxes
What two multiplication facts do we solve?
5 × [ ___ ] & 5 × [ ___ ]
Prompt 3: Sum
What is the total sum?
Draw this frame on your board:
60 8
5
5 × 60 = ? [ 300 ]
5 × 8 = ? [ 40 ]
Total: 300 + 40 = 340
💬 Turn & Talk: How did knowing 5 × 6 = 30 help you find 5 × 60? Check partner's work!
Guided Practice
Let's Try Together: 4 × 426
3-Digit Challenge
Step 1: Partition 426 400 + 20 + 6
Multiply each by 4
400 20 6
4
4 × 400 1,600
4 × 20 80
4 × 6 24
1,600 + 80 + 24 = 1,704
Did you regroup when adding 80 + 24 = 104? Always double-check your addition column!

The Box Method Checklist
Key Takeaway
1
Expand Accurately
Never drop a zero! A digit in the tens column must end with one zero; hundreds column ends with two zeros.
2
Multiply Boxes
Multiply the row factor by each column header. Double check basic multiplication facts!
3
Stack and Sum
Write partial products vertically with columns lined up by place value to avoid addition slips.
