Common Pitfall
Why Can't We Just Add Across?
The Trap
1/2 + 1/3 ≠ 2/5
1/2 of a pizza is already half! Adding 1/3 more MUST be greater than half, but 2/5 is smaller than a half!
Slices Don't Match!
1/2 Pizza (Giant)
1/3 Pizza (Medium)
You cannot combine different-sized slices until both pizzas are cut into identical pieces!
Denominators tell us the size of each piece. They MUST be identical!
Instructional Blueprint
3 Steps to Master Unlike Fractions
1
Find the LCD
List multiples of both denominators to find the Least Common Denominator.
Multiples of 2: 2, 4, 6
Multiples of 3: 3, 6
2
Make Equivalent
Multiply numerator and denominator by the same factor so slices match.
1/2 × 3/3 = 3/6
1/3 × 2/2 = 2/6
3
Add & Simplify
Add/subtract numerators, keep the denominator, and reduce if possible!
3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6
Golden Rule: The denominator NEVER changes once it is common!
Guided Model 1
Addition: 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6
LCD = 6
1/2 renamed to 3/6
3 sixths
1/3 renamed to 2/6
2 sixths
Combined Total:
3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6
Guided Model 2
Subtraction: 3/4 - 1/6
LCD = 12
Convert to Twelfths
3/4 × 3/3 = 9/12
1/6 × 2/2 = 2/12
Subtract Numerators
Start with 9 twelfths, cut away 2:
✕
✕
9/12 - 2/12 = 7/12
Check: Is 7/12 in simplest form? Yes! 7 is prime and cannot divide 12.

Guided Model 2
Subtraction with Regrouping
3 1/4 - 1 2/3
1. Rename to LCD 12
3 1/4 = 3 3/12
1 2/3 = 1 8/12
We cannot subtract 8/12 from 3/12! Need regrouping!
2. Borrow 1 Whole
Decompose 1 whole from 3 into 12/12 :
3 3/12 = 2 + 12/12 + 3/12 = 2 15/12
2 15/12 - 1 8/12 = 1 7/12
Regrouping rule: Take 1 from whole, add the denominator to numerator (3 + 12 = 15 twelfths)!
