Warm-Up: The Mental Machine
Challenge students with 5 quick mental math problems. Focus on "Zero-Ending" numbers (e.g., 50 + 70, 100 - 35, 12 x 5). This builds confidence and activates prior knowledge.

Part 1: Addition & Subtraction (The Foundation)
Review regrouping (carrying) and borrowing. Key Tip: Emphasize lining up place values. Introduce the "Key Words" chart (Sum, Difference, Fewer than, Combined).
"If a problem says 'How many more', we are almost always subtracting."

Part 2: Multiplication & Division (The Scaling)
Review the partial products method for multiplication and the standard algorithm for long division. Focus on interpreting remainders in context (Round up? Drop it?).

Activity: Operation Sprint
Split students into pairs. They rotate through 4 stations (one for each operation). Each station has 1 computation and 1 word problem. Use the Operation Sprint Cards .

Wrap-Up & Checkpoint
Review one difficult problem from the sprint as a class. Distribute the Checkpoint Exit Ticket to assess individual mastery.
Differentiation Strategy
Scaffolded Support
Provide multiplication charts and place-value grids. Use "Money Math" analogies for subtraction (borrowing a ten is like breaking a $10 bill into ones).
Extension
Introduce multi-step problems where they must add then divide (averages). Challenge them to write their own word problem for a given equation.
