Slide 1 / 7
The Golden Rule Slide 2 / 7
The Law of the Cosmic Scale
An equation is like a perfectly balanced scales. If you add or remove weight from one side, you must do the exact same to the other side to keep it from tipping.
The Equal Sign (\(=\))
Acts as our center pivot point (the fulcrum). It must always remain true.
LEFT SIDE
RIGHT SIDE
LHS = RHS
Perfect Equilibrium
Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other.
Battle Strategy Slide 3 / 7
Your 4-Step Guide to Victory
Follow these strategic maneuvers to isolate your variable and conquer any linear equation.
1
Simplify
Clear parentheses with the Distributive Property. Combine like terms on each side.
\(2(x+3) \rightarrow 2x+6\)
2
Group Variables
Move all variable terms to one side of the scale using addition or subtraction.
Subtract \(2x\) from both sides
3
Isolate Term
Move constant terms (numbers) to the opposite side using inverse operations.
Add/subtract constants
4
Isolate Variable
Multiply or divide to find the final value of the unknown variable \(x\).
Divide by coefficient
Isolate: Get the variable entirely by itself on one side.
Worked Example 1 Slide 4 / 7
Level 1: No Parentheses
Solve:
\[5x - 3 = 2x + 9\]
Notice variables exist on both the left (\(5x\)) and right (\(2x\)). We must consolidate them first!
1
Subtract \(2x\) from both sides
Moves all variable terms to the left.
\[(5x - 2x) - 3 = 9 \implies 3x - 3 = 9\]
2
Add \(3\) to both sides
Isolates the variable term.
\[3x = 9 + 3 \implies 3x = 12\]
3
Divide both sides by \(3\)
Isolates \(x\).
\[x = \frac{12}{3} \implies x = 4\]
Check your answer: \(5(4) - 3 = 17\) and \(2(4) + 9 = 17\). It balances!
Worked Example 2 Slide 5 / 7
Level 2: Distributive Property
Solve:
\[2(3x - 1) = 4x + 10\]
We must simplify the left side first by distributing the \(2\) to clear the parentheses.
1
Distribute the \(2\)
Multiply \(2\) by both terms inside.
\[2 \cdot 3x - 2 \cdot 1 = 4x + 10 \implies 6x - 2 = 4x + 10\]
2
Subtract \(4x\) from both sides
Consolidate variable terms on the left.
\[2x - 2 = 10\]
3
Add \(2\) & Divide by \(2\)
Isolate constants, then solve for \(x\).
\[2x = 12 \implies x = 6\]
Verification: \(2(3(6)-1) = 2(17) = 34\) & \(4(6)+10 = 34\). Perfect balance!
Guided Practice Slide 6 / 7
Let's Battle Together
Work with a partner or guide your teammates to balance these two equations.
Mission 1 No parentheses
\[4x + 7 = 2x + 15\]
Tactical Clues:
- Which variable term should you move first?
- How do you isolate the constants on the right?
Mission 2 Distributive action
\[3(2x - 4) = 2x + 12\]
Tactical Clues:
- First step: Distribute the \(3\) to clean up the left side.
- Careful with the sign: \(3 \cdot (-4) = -12\).
Hint: Try to keep the variable coefficient positive when choosing sides!
Solo Showdown Slide 7 / 7
The Solo Showdown Challenge
Prove your balance scale skills with these final challenges. Solve them independently on your worksheets.
Challenge 1
\[7x - 4 = 3x + 16\]
Level: Base Battle
Challenge 2
\[5(x + 2) = 2x + 19\]
Level: Warp Gate
Challenge 3
\[2(4x - 3) = 3(2x + 4)\]
Level: Cosmic Master

I Concept Check Solutions (20 pts)
Correct Option
1. To keep the equation 6x - 4 = 2x + 8 perfectly balanced, which of the following is the most efficient and mathematically correct first step?
A Add 4 to both sides
B Subtract 2x from both sides
C Divide the left side by 6
D Multiply the right side by 2
Rationale: Option B gathers all variable terms on one side in a single step with positive coefficients. Adding 4 (Option A) is mathematically correct but does not address variables on both sides.
II Equation Solutions (80 pts)
MISSION 1 SOLUTION (15 PTS) Rubric: 5 pts variables, 5 pts constants, 5 pts divide
4x + 12 = 2x + 20
Step-by-step Solution:
Step 1 (Gather variables): Subtract 2x from both sides.
4x - 2x + 12 = 20 ⇒ 2x + 12 = 20
Step 2 (Gather constants): Subtract 12 from both sides.
2x = 20 - 12 ⇒ 2x = 8
Step 3 (Solve): Divide both sides by 2.
x = 8 / 2 ⇒ x = 4
ANSWER KEY:
x = 4

MISSION 2 SOLUTION (20 PTS) Rubric: 5 pts distribute, 5 pts variables, 5 pts constants, 5 pts divide
3(2x - 4) = 2x + 12
Step-by-step Solution:
Step 1 (Distribute): Multiply 3 by each term.
3(2x) - 3(4) = 2x + 12 ⇒ 6x - 12 = 2x + 12
Step 2 (Subtract 2x): 4x - 12 = 12
Step 3 (Add 12): 4x = 24 ⇒ x = 6
ANSWER KEY:
x = 6
MISSION 3 SOLUTION (20 PTS) Rubric: 10 pts double distribute, 10 pts solving steps
2(4x - 3) = 3(2x + 4)
Step-by-step Solution:
Step 1 (Distribute both sides):
2(4x) - 2(3) = 3(2x) + 3(4) ⇒ 8x - 6 = 6x + 12
Step 2 (Subtract 6x): 2x - 6 = 12
2x = 18 ⇒
