Leftovers & Full Packs
When division leaves a remainder, what does that number actually tell us? Today we crack the code on full batches versus leftovers!
1
Goal 1: Identify full completed groups
2
Goal 2: Name what the remainder represents
THE COOKIE SHOP MYSTERY
Evidence Log #1
Baker Maya baked 38 fresh cookies. She packs them into gift boxes of 4 cookies each.
Math Squad Equation:
38 ÷ 4 = 9 with a remainder of 2
Quotient: 9 Full boxes packaged
Remainder: 2 Loose cookies remaining
Notice: 9 boxes of 4 uses 36 cookies. 36 + 2 leftovers = 38 cookies in total.
READ THE QUESTION CAREFULLY
The Question Decides!
QUESTION A: FULL GROUPS
"How many full boxes can Baker Maya sell?"
She can only sell boxes with all 4 cookies inside. The 2 leftovers cannot make a complete box!
Answer: 9 full boxes (Ignore the remainder!)
QUESTION B: LEFTOVER ITEMS
"How many cookies are left over for the staff?"
The question is NOT asking about the boxes at all! It only asks about the extra loose cookies.
Answer: 2 cookies (Use only the remainder!)
Detective Rule #1: Always circle the exact question word before writing your final answer!
DETECTIVE PAIR INVESTIGATION
2 Minutes Partner Talk
Detective Marcus has 29 stickers. He gives an equal number to each of his 6 team members.
Calculation: 29 ÷ 6 = 4 with a remainder of 5
Partner A Asks:
"How many stickers does each team member receive?"
Which part of the division is the answer?
Partner B Asks:
"How many stickers does Marcus keep as leftovers?"
Which part of the division is the answer?
Answer Check: Each gets 4 stickers (quotient). Marcus keeps 5 stickers (remainder).
DETECTIVE DEBRIEF & WORKSHOP READY
Lesson 1 Takeaway
DROP THE REMAINDER
Use the quotient only when the problem asks for complete packages, whole items made, or equal shares handed out.
Keywords: "full bags", "complete sets", "each gets"
USE THE REMAINDER
Use the remainder only when the problem specifically asks what is left over, remaining, or unable to fit into a full pack.
Keywords: "left over", "remaining", "extra"

THE FIELD TRIP CRISIS
Evidence Log #2
There are 31 students going to the Science Museum. Each passenger van holds 6 students.
How many vans are needed to take everyone ?
Math Equation:
31 ÷ 6 = 5 R 1
If we only order 5 vans...
5 vans × 6 students = 30 students.
1 student would be left behind on the sidewalk!
Can we leave that student? NEVER!

Case File Showdown Answers KEY
TEACHER ANSWER KEY & GUIDE
Case File Showdown • 4th Grade Mathematics
FOR INSTRUCTOR USE
[DROP IT / IGNORE] Quotient is the answer. Remainder can't form a full group.
[ROUND UP / ADD 1] Quotient + 1 is the answer. Every person/item must be covered.
[USE REMAINDER] Remainder is the answer. Story specifically asks for leftovers.
KEY #301 Apple Orchard Stand (86 ÷ 6)
Strategy: DROP IT
Division Calculation
\( 86 \div 6 = 14 \text{ R } 2 \)
\( 14 \times 6 = 84 \); \( 84 + 2 = 86 \)
Correct Answer: 14 full bags
Teacher Note: Students may be tempted to write 14 R 2 or 15. Emphasize that the farm stand cannot sell an incomplete bag with only 2 apples. The 2 apples are kept aside.
KEY #302 Whitewater River Expedition (54 ÷ 8)
Strategy: ADD 1 (ROUND UP)
Division Calculation
\( 54 \div 8 = 6 \text{ R } 6 \)
\( 6 \text{ full rafts} = 48 \text{ campers} \)
Correct Answer: 7 rafts (\( 6 + 1 = 7 \))
Teacher Note: If only 6 rafts are launched, 6 campers would be stranded on the riverbank! The 7th raft carries the remaining 6 campers (with 2 empty spots).
KEY #303 Pizza Lunch Celebration (35 ÷ 8)
Strategy: LEFTOVER ONLY
Division Calculation
\( 35 \div 8 = 4 \text{ R } 3 \)
8 teams get 4 slices each (32 used)
Correct Answer: 3 slices for teachers
Teacher Note: The question does NOT ask how many slices each student team gets (4). It specifically asks for the leftovers designated for teachers (the remainder 3).

SECTION 2
CASES #304, #305 & INTERVENTION MATRIX
Solutions Continued
KEY #304 Flower Shop Ribbons (65 ÷ 7)
Strategy: DROP IT
Division Calculation
\( 65 \div 7 = 9 \text{ R } 2 \)
\( 9 \times 7 = 63 \text{ feet used} \)
Correct Answer: 9 complete bouquets
Rationale: The remaining 2 feet is too short to wrap another 7-foot bouquet. Drop the remainder.
KEY #305 Kayak Storage Racks (46 ÷ 6)
Strategy: ADD 1 (ROUND UP)
Division Calculation
\( 46 \div 6 = 7 \text{ R } 4 \)
7 racks hold 42 kayaks
Correct Answer: 8 storage racks (\( 7 + 1 = 8 \))
Rationale: Leaving 4 kayaks floating on the dock in winter causes damage. An 8th rack is required to house the remaining 4 kayaks.
Rapid Response Grid Solutions
Scenario
Correct Action
Instructional Rationale
Balls that cannot fit in bags
LEFTOVER
The question explicitly asks for unbagged items.
Buses for 130 kids (40 per bus)
ADD 1
10 kids cannot be left at school; need 4th bus.
Buying card packs with $19 ($4 each)
DROP IT
Store will not sell 3/4 of a pack. You can buy 4.
COMMON 4TH GRADE MISCONCEPTIONS & HOW TO INTERVENE
Misconception 1: Writing "R" Everywhere
Students compute \( 46 \div 6 = 7 \text{ R } 4 \) and write "7 R 4 racks". Remind them: you cannot buy or set up "7 R 4" objects in real life!
Misconception 2: Standard Rounding Rules
Students think they only round up if the remainder is half or more of the divisor. Stress: in transport/safety problems, even a remainder of 1 requires an entire extra vehicle!
