Master Key & Exemplars
Standard: 1.OA.5, 1.OA.6
Strategy: Counting On 1, 2, or 3
Key Tool: 1–10 Number Path
1 Guided Practice: 5 + 2 Solution: 7
Path Action: Student circles 5 . Draws 2 forward arc hops pointing to 6 and 7.
Verbal prompt: "Say 5, then hop: 6, 7!"
5 + 2 = 7
2 Independent Hop: 6 + 3 Solution: 9
Path Action: Student circles 6 . Draws 3 forward hops landing on 7, 8, and 9.
Check: Ensure student does not count 6 as hop #1.
6 + 3 = 9
3 Fluency Count On Practice All 3 Solved
3a 7 + 2 = 9

4 Story Problem: Sam's Toy Cars Total: 8
Number Bond: Top bubble (whole) is 8 . Parts are 5 and 3.
Sentence: 5 + 3 = 8
Statement: Sam has 8 toy cars in all.

Common Misconceptions
Counting the start box: Some students point to 5 and say "one" instead of hopping to 6. Have them chant: "Start on 5, get ready... hop 1 (6), hop 2 (7)!"
Hopping backwards: Ensure hops move right towards greater numbers.
Scaffolding & Extension
Striving Learners: Provide physical counters or a finger puppet to physically leap from box to box on the path.
Advanced Extension: Ask students: "If the total is 9 and we hopped 2 times, what number did we start on?" (Reverse thinking).
Discussion Question: "Why is it faster to start at the bigger number and count on rather than counting from 1?" Eureka Debrief

4 Read the story. Count on using 5-groups to solve.
Kira has 6 red apples. She picks 3 green apples. How many apples does Kira have altogether?
Draw 3 more dots:
"6... 7, 8, 9"
=
Kira has apples.
Remember: 5-groups make it easy to see 5, then count on from the extra dots!

Standard: 1.OA.5, 1.OA.6
Strategy: 5-Group Subitizing + Count On
Key Tool: Number Bonds & 5-Groups
1 Guided Practice: 5 + 2 Solution: 7
Drawing: Student draws 2 dark dots inside the dashed circles.
Bond: Whole = 7 , Parts = 5 and 2.
Verbal prompt: "See 5, count on: 6, 7!"
5 + 2 = 7
2 Counting On from 6: 6 + 3 Solution: 9
Drawing: Student draws 3 dots in the dashed circles.
Bond: Whole = 9 , Parts = 6 and 3.
Verbal prompt: "Lock in 6... count 7, 8, 9!"
6 + 3 = 9
3 Independent 5-Group Bonds Both Total 9
3a. 7 + 2 = 9
Draws 2 dots. Bond whole is 9 . Equation: 7 + 2 = 9
3b. 8 + 1 = 9
Draws 1 dot. Bond whole is 9 . Equation: 8 + 1 = 9
4 Story Problem: Kira's Apples Total: 9
Drawing: Student draws 3 open dots next to the 6 filled dots.
Number Bond: Whole = 9 . Parts = 6 and 3 .
Sentence: 6 + 3 = 9
Statement: Kira has 9 apples altogether.

Eureka Watch-Outs
Recounting from 1: Students may still want to tap and count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... Cover the 5 group with your hand and ask: "How many are hiding? So say 5, now count on!"
Bond Orientation: Remind students that the single circle connecting to two paths is always the whole (total), regardless of whether it is at the top or side.
Targeted Support
Concrete manipulatives: Have students place two-color counters over the 5-group dots (e.g. red for the given part, yellow for the counted on part).
Finger Counting On: Prompt students to "touch their head" for the first part and pop up fingers for the second part.
Debrief Question: "How did seeing a 5-group help you know what number to count on from?" Eureka Debrief
