The Verbatim Challenge (Hook - 5 mins)
SCRIPT TO READ (Read at a brisk, natural lecture pace):
"The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the late 1700s, was a period of global transition that saw the shift from agrarian societies to industrial ones, fundamentally changing how humans lived through the introduction of steam power and new manufacturing processes which resulted in mass production of goods."
**Task:** Ask students to try and write this down word-for-word as you read. After you finish, ask them to hold up their hands if they got every word. (Likely zero). Discuss why "Verbatim" is the enemy of "Understanding."

Signal Hunting (10 mins)
Use **Slides 3-4**. Explicitly teach that signal words are "the teacher's way of bolding text in the air."
Teaching Point: Working memory can only hold about 4-7 chunks of info. Verbatim takes up all those chunks. Shorthand compresses those chunks so the brain can keep up.

Read the following script. **Pause slightly after signal words.** Encourage students to use the shorthand symbols (&, →, ∆) learned on Slide 4.
