Attribute Investigation
Objective
Identify shared attributes (color, size, shape) and sort objects into 'Same' and 'Different' categories.

Mystery Box (shoebox with a hole)

The Mystery Box Hook
"Detectives, I found this box in the evidence locker! We need to see if the clues inside match."
Reach in and pull out one object (e.g., a big red block).
Reach in again and pull out a second object (e.g., a small blue block).
Ask: "Are these exactly the same? Give me a thumbs up for YES or a thumbs down for NO."Introduce vocabulary: "They are different because they are not the same color or size."

Define Attributes
Use the slides to show simple examples. Focus on color first, then shape , then size . Use the physical objects from the Mystery Box to demonstrate.

Guided Sorting
Place a "Master Clue" (e.g., a yellow button) in the center of the rug. Give each student one object. If their object is "the same color" as the clue, they place it on the right. If it is different, they place it on the left.

Independent Mission
Hand out the Sorting Detectives Mat . Give students small sets of manipulatives (3 matching items, 2 different) to sort onto their mats.

Classroom Clue Hunt
Walk the Room
In this lesson, students take the concept of attributes out into the physical classroom. They will identify items that share a specific attribute with a target object provided by you.
Clues to Set Up
RED CLUE: An apple or red block
BIG CLUE: A large teddy bear
ROUND CLUE: A clock or ball

The Detective Briefing
Gather students at the rug. Hand out magnifying glasses (real or paper) to officially deputize them as "Comparison Detectives." Show the RED CLUE and ask, "Where else in our room can we find this same color?"

The Controlled Search
Model how to walk safely to an item (e.g., a red chair) and "check the clue" by holding your target object near it. Say: "This chair is red. This block is red. They are the SAME !"

Log the Evidence
Students use the Clue Hunt Log . For each box, they find one item in the room and draw it. Encourage them to draw details to show why it matches (e.g., coloring it very red).
Challenge
Ask students to find one item that is the same color but a different size than your target clue.
Support
Work in a small group. Bring the items to the table so students can physically touch both the clue and the classroom item while drawing.

Physical Space:
Clear a large circle on the rug. Lay two large hula hoops (different colors if possible, e.g., Red and Blue) side-by-side but NOT overlapping yet.
Materials:
2 Hula Hoops
Items that are Red (block, truck, ball)
Items that are Round (ball, plate, clock)
Items that are BOTH (Red Ball)
Phase 1: Separate Worlds
1. Label the Hoops: Label Hoop A as "Red Things" and Hoop B as "Round Things".
2. Sorting Action: Give students objects. Have them place a red car in the Red hoop and a white plate in the Round hoop.
3. The Dilemma: Show a RED BALL . Ask: "Where does this go? It is Red, but it is also Round!"
Phase 2: The Middle Meeting
"Detectives, these circles need to share! Watch what happens when we slide them together..."
The Action
Slide the hoops so they overlap. Point to the new middle section. Place the Red Ball there.
The Script
"In the middle, things are BOTH! It's Red AND it's Round. It's the same as both clues!"

Students move from physical objects to picture representation. This lesson focuses on using the Venn diagram as a tool for classification and justifying their choices with simple logic.
The Mix-Up Game Hook
Start the lesson by showing a large T-chart on the board labeled "Dogs" and "Cats".
"Detectives, I tried to sort my clues this morning, but I think I made a mistake."
Purposely place a picture of a Golden Retriever in the "Cats" column.
Wait for the inevitable "NO!" and giggles.
"Oh? Why doesn't he belong there? Tell me what makes him different from a cat."

Define Categories
Explain the Evidence Board (Sort and Stick Activity). Review the categories: Can Fly, Can Swim, and the middle section for BOTH. Remind them of the hula hoops from Lesson 3.

Model the Middle
Pick up the DUCK card. Ask: "Does a duck fly? (Yes). Does a duck swim? (Yes). So where is its home on our board?" (The BOTH section).

Independent Investigation
Students cut out their cards and sort them BEFORE gluing. Circulation Tip: Ask students "Why did you put the Penguin there?" to check for understanding of unique traits vs shared traits.
