Sum
The total all together!
Add means to combine parts to find the total! Say it with me: Addend + Addend = Sum!
Addition Rule #1
The Commutative Property (Order Rule)
Start with 7, add 4
7 + 4 = 11
Flip it! Start with 4, add 7
4 + 7 = 11
"Change the order of the addends, and the sum stays the exact same!"
Addition Rule #2
The Zero Property (Identity Rule)
When you add 0 to any number...
Zero means none . You aren't adding any more parts, so the number stays identical!
16 + 0 = 16
0 + 9 = 9 (Never changes!)
12 + 0 = 12 (Still 12!)
20 + 0 = 20 (Hero Zero!)
Math Superpower: Any Number + 0 = The Same Number!

Put the bigger number in your head: 12
2
COUNT FORWARD
Tap 3 times forward: 13... 14... 15!

Strategy 2: The +1 Detective
Near Doubles (Doubles Plus 1)
Problem: 6 + 7 = ? 7 is just 1 more than 6!
Step 1: Spot the Double
6 + 6
I already know this is 12 !
+1 more
Step 2: Add 1 More
12 + 1 = 13
So 6 + 7 = 13 !
Think: 7 + 8 = ? 7 + 7 = 14 ➔ +1 = 15!
Think: 8 + 9 = ? 8 + 8 = 16 ➔ +1 = 17!
Detective Rule: If two numbers sit right next to each other on the number line, use Double the smaller number and add 1!
Strategy 3: The Friendly Ten
Making 10: The Magic Bridge
Problem: 8 + 5 = ?
8 needs 2 more to fill a 10-frame!
Borrow from the 5:
8
5
(2) (3)
Split 5 into 2 and 3 !
Now add with friendly 10:
8 + 2 = 10 (Full Frame!)
10 + 3 = 13!
Adding to 10 is super fast and easy!
Whenever an addend is 8 or 9 , make 10 first!
Double Dash Game Activity Day 2 • Partner Strategy Game
Double Dash!
Player 1 (Color A): ________________
Player 2 (Color B): ________________
How to Play: On your turn, pick an open square. Solve the doubles or near-doubles equation out loud. Explain your strategy: "I know 6+6=12, so 6+7 is 1 more, which is 13!" If your partner agrees, color the box with your crayon. First player to connect 4 squares in a line (row, column, or diagonal) wins the Dash!

Strategy 1: Friendly Ten Friends
Hunt for Ten First!
Solve: 4 + 7 + 6 = ? Do you see two numbers that make 10?
Step 1: Group the 10
4 + 6 = 10
Join the two ten-friends first!
Add the 3rd number
Step 2: Add 7
10 + 7 = 17
Fast and seamless mental math!
Ten pairs to watch for: 1 + 9 2 + 8 3 + 7 4 + 6 5 + 5
Key Rule: You can group and add numbers in any order you want!
Strategy 2: Double Trouble
Spot the Twins in the Trio!
Solve: 5 + 8 + 5 = ? Spot the identical twins!
Step 1: Double Fact
5 + 5 = 10
Combine the twin addends first!
Then add remaining 8
Step 2: Add 8
10 + 8 = 18
Total sum is 18 !
Try in your head: 3 + 9 + 3 3 + 3 = 6 ➔ 6 + 9 = 15!
Try in your head: 4 + 7 + 4 4 + 4 = 8 ➔ 8 + 7 = 15!
Mathematician Wisdom: Always scan all 3 numbers before you start adding!
Problem-Solving Protocol
The 4-Step Story Sleuth Routine
1
READ & CIRCLE
Read twice. Circle numbers and underline what the question asks.
"What do I know?"
2
PLAN STRATEGY
Pick your path: Make 10? Doubles? Counting On?
"How will I group?"
3
WRITE EQUATION
Write the number sentence with addends and find the sum.
"a + b + c = ?"
4
LABEL & CHECK
Write the answer with its unit label and check if it makes sense!
"17 cookies!"
Never just write a number - mathematicians always include the unit word!
