Set Decomposition Objectives Guide
Kindergarten Instructional Framework
Decomposing Pictorial Sets
Course Goals • Standards Architecture • 4-Part Measurable Learning Objectives
Domain Alignment CCSS Math: K.OA • CCSS ELA: SL & L
Major Course Goals
In Kindergarten, students transition from simple counting to flexible algebraic thinking. The overarching course goals are: (1) develop foundational part-part-whole reasoning by understanding that any set can be decomposed into smaller subsets without altering the total quantity; and (2) integrate mathematical representation with verbal discourse, articulating relational thinking through complete, descriptive sentences.
Target Common Core Standards (Coding, Descriptors & Links)
Cross-Disciplinary Math & Literacy
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.3 Math Content (Operations & Algebraic Thinking)
thecorestandards.org/Math/Content/K/OA/A/3/
“Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).”
Standard Synthesis: Requires visual set decomposition based on attributes (e.g., color, position, orientation) and dual symbolic/pictorial documentation while maintaining total set conservation.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.6 & L.K.1.f Literacy & Language (Speaking & Listening / Conventions)
thecorestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/SL/K/6/
“Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly (SL.K.6); Produce and expand complete sentences in shared language activities (L.K.1.f).”
Standard Synthesis: Bridges visual-mathematical manipulation into oral literacy by empowering students to construct syntactically complete relational explanations (e.g., “I see 5 critters. 3 are dark and 2 are light.”).
Measurable Learning Objectives (4-Target Architecture)
Knowledge • Reasoning • Skill / Modeling • Language
1. Knowledge Objective Conceptual
Given a pictured set of up to 6 objects, students will identify the invariant total and recognize that the group can be partitioned into two distinct subsets based on observable attributes (color, size, or position).
Standard: CCSS.MATH.K.OA.A.3 • Identify & Recall
2. Reasoning Objective Analytical
Students will analyze a pictorial set to formulate and compare at least two different decompositions (\(\text{e.g., } 5 = 3 + 2\text{ and } 5 = 4 + 1\)), proving that both distinct pairs equal the same whole set.
Standard: CCSS.MATH.K.OA.A.3 • Analyze & Justify
3. Skill & Modeling Objective Procedural
Given a partitioned picture, students will accurately transcribe the subsets into symbolic number bonds and addition equations (\(N = A + B\)), using plus (\(+\)) and equal (\(=\)) symbols correctly in 3 out of 3 trials.
Standard: CCSS.MATH.K.OA.A.1 & K.OA.A.3 • Model & Write
4. Language Objective Discourse
During structured partner talk, students will orally explain their pictorial decomposition using the sentence frame: “There are [whole] in all. I broke them into [part] and [part].” with audible volume and clarity.
Standard: CCSS.ELA.SL.K.6 & L.K.1.f • Articulate
Student-Facing “I Can” Statements
Explore & Sort
“I can look at a picture and find 2 groups that make the whole set.”
Show & Write
“I can show my parts with circles, number bonds, or number sentences.”
Talk & Share
“I can tell my math buddy how I broke my group apart in full sentences.”

Instructional Application & Exemplars
Pictorial Decomposition in Action
Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract (CPA)
1. Identify Whole
Count the complete set in the image to establish the invariant total (\(N = 5\)).
2. Detect Attributes
Notice differences in color, size, pattern, or position to partition into two subgroups.
3. Record & Articulate
Transfer visual groups into number bonds and vocalize the mathematical relation.
Exemplar Set: 5 Garden Critters (Decomposed 2 Ways)
Whole = 5
Way 1: By Shading 3 Dark + 2 Light

Number Bond 5 → 3 and 2
Equation \(5 = 3 + 2\)
Way 2: By Position 4 On Branch + 1 In Air

△
Number Bond 5 → 4 and 1
Equation \(5 = 4 + 1\)
Structured Literacy & Talk Frames (SL.K.6 & L.K.1.f)
Frame A: Partitioning
“I counted [5] in all. I noticed that [3] are dark and [2] are light.”
Frame B: Comparing Methods
“My friend decomposed [5] into [4 and 1], but I broke mine into [3 and 2]. Both equal 5!”
Formative Assessment Observation Rubric
Diagnostic Check
| Proficiency Level | Observable Mathematical Behavior | Literacy / Oral Output |
|---|
| Beginning | Counts total correctly but struggles to separate into two distinct visual subgroups without physical counters. | Names single numbers without relational sentence structure. |
| Developing | Decomposes set in 1 way correctly using visual cues; requires prompting to discover a 2nd way for the same set. | Uses sentence frame with partial teacher scaffolding. |
| Proficient | Independently decomposes set in 2+ ways and accurately links to number bond and addition expression. | Fluently expresses reasoning using target vocabulary and complete sentences. |
