Pocket Stories Lesson Plan
Duration
40-45 Mins
Focus Concept
Joining / Add To (Result Unknown)
Number Range
Sums within 5 (Extend to 10)
Grouping
Whole Group & Pairs
Math Standard
CCSS K.OA.A.1, K.OA.A.2
Learning Objectives
- Model joining: Students will physically place two sets of items into pockets to model addition stories.
- Verbalize addition: Students will state the story using "and" and "is" (e.g., "2 frogs and 1 frog make 3 frogs in all").
- "I Can" Statement: "I can put groups together in my pocket to find out how many in all!"
Materials Needed
• Teacher apron with 2 front pockets (or 2-pocket chart)
• Student wearable cardstock pockets or felt pouch
• Math counters (bear counters, foam acorns, or cubes)
• Large 0-5 numeral and plus/equals flashcards
Key Math Vocabulary
Add / Join In All / Total Plus (+) Together
1
The Mystery Pocket Hook (7 Mins)
Whole Group Carpet
Teacher Action: Wear the two-pocket math apron (Pocket A on the left, Pocket B on the right). Hold up 2 acorn counters.
Script: "Sammy Squirrel found 2 crunchy acorns and tucked them into my left pocket! Let's count them: 1, 2! Then, his sister Penny brought 1 more acorn and put it into my right pocket. How many acorns did Sammy hide? How many did Penny bring?"
Check For Understanding Students hold up fingers to match each pocket: 2 fingers on the left hand, 1 finger on the right hand. Reinforce counting before combining.
2
Direct Modeling: The Joining Move (10 Mins)
Explicit Modeling
Step-by-Step Explicit Routine:
A. Name the Parts Show Pocket 1 (e.g., 3 bears). Place numeral 3 card beside it. Show Pocket 2 (1 bear) with numeral 1.
B. The "Pour Together" Physically empty both pockets into one giant collection bowl or hands held together: "Join them together!"
C. Count the Whole Touch and count in a row: 1, 2, 3, 4! Say: "3 bears and 1 bear joined together make 4 bears in all!"
*Gesture cue: Cup both hands apart, then clamp them gently together while saying the magic word "Together!"

We Do: Pocket Theater (10 Mins)
Invite student volunteers to wear the "helper pockets". The class tells a shared story:
Prompt: "Ducks in the Pond"
• Student A tucks 2 ducks in Pocket A.
• Student B tucks 2 ducks in Pocket B.
• The class choruses: "2 ducks swim over, 2 ducks splash in! How many ducks in the pond?"
• Empty both into the pond mat and recount together: 4 ducks!
4
You Do: Pocket Pairs (10 Mins)
Students work in partner pairs at tables with double-pocket mats and math counters:
Partner Station Flow:
1. Roll & Fill: Partner 1 rolls dot die (1-3) & fills Pocket 1.
2. Roll & Fill: Partner 2 rolls dot die (1-2) & fills Pocket 2.
3. Dump & Combine: Pour into center basket.
4. Retell the Story: "[__] and [__] make [__]!"
Differentiation & Multi-Tiered Support
Intervention / Emerging
- • Keep sums strictly within 1 to 3.
- • Use distinct contrasting colors for each pocket (e.g., blue bears vs. red bears).
- • Place items onto a 5-frame line before combining to reinforce 1-to-1 correspondence.
Multilingual Learners
- • Concrete TPR gestures: hands wide apart for "and", clap hands together for "in all".
- • Sentence Frame Strips: "___ in pocket, ___ in pocket, ___ together!" with picture prompts.
- • Encourage home language translation for number words.
Extension / Advanced
- • Extend sums up to 10 using ten-frame pocket inserts.
- • Introduce the written symbols: student records "\(2 + 3 = 5\)" on mini dry-erase boards.
- • Reverse riddle: "My pockets have 4 bears in all. What could be in each pocket?"
Formative Assessment Checklist
Circulate during Step 4 with clipboard
| Skill Indicator | Mastery (3) | Developing (2) | Needs Support (1) |
|---|
| 1. Modeling Story | Accurately places correct count into each pocket. | Places items but miscounts by 1 or combines early. | Struggles with 1-to-1 counting into pockets. |
| 2. Joining Concept | Understands pouring together creates one larger total. | Needs verbal prompt to combine before recounting. | Recounts only one pocket; misses the combined total. |
| 3. Math Explanation | Confidently states "2 and 1 make 3 in all!" | States total number but omits the parts (addends). | Cannot verbalize relationship without direct echo. |
Closing Routine (5 Mins): "The Pocket Pass"
Gather at rug. Teacher shows 3 stars in Pocket 1 and 2 stars in Pocket 2. Whole class calls out: "3 and 2 joined together makes 5 shining stars!" Quick thumbs up self-check.
