Number Sense Station Cards Activity
NUMBER SENSE HANDS-ON LAB
Tactile Station Rotation Cards • Active Concrete Practice
15–20 Min / Station Pairs or Trios
Fold lengthwise into sturdy table tent or cut along border STATIONS 1 & 2
01
The Place Value Architect
Strand: Place Value, Magnitude & Flexible Renaming
Base-Ten Blocks + 4 Polyhedral Dice
1 Cube = 1,000 → 1 Flat = 100 → 1 Rod = 10 → 1 Unit = 1
Key Rule: 1 Flat ⇄ 10 Rods (100 = 10 × 10)
Hands-On Action Protocol
1 Roll & Build: Roll four 10-sided dice to produce a 4-digit number (e.g., 3, 5, 2, 8 = 3,528). Lay out matching physical blocks on your place value mat.
2 The Explosion Swap: Choose one column. Physically trade 1 flat for 10 rods, or 1 rod for 10 unit cubes. Re-count your total blocks together.
3 Magnitude Proof: Explain to your partner why the physical shape completely changed, yet the total magnitude remains exactly the same!
Partner Math Talk
"Even though we traded 1 flat for 10 rods, the total magnitude is still because every flat is composed of 10 tens."
⭐ Level Up Challenges
Level 2: Decompose your number using zero flats.
Level 3 (Boss): Physically model multiplying by 10. How does every single block transform?
Station Reset: Sort base-ten blocks back into category bins. Passport Check: Box 1
02
The Benchmark Clothesline
Strand: Fractions, Decimals & Rational Benchmarks
Hanging Clothesline + Clothespins
0.0 (Zero) ———————— \( \frac{1}{2} \) = 0.50 ———————— 1.0 (Whole)
Test benchmark: Is it closer to 0, \( \frac{1}{2} \), or 1?
Hands-On Action Protocol
1 Anchor the Line: Peg benchmark cards 0, \( \frac{1}{2} \) (0.50), and 1 at proportional intervals along your hanging clothesline.
2 Draw & Debate: Draw 3 mystery cards (fractions & decimals: e.g., \( \frac{3}{8} \), \( 0.75 \), \( \frac{4}{5} \), \( 0.2 \)). Reason with your partner: does it fall left or right of \( \frac{1}{2} \)?
3 Physical Verification: Peg each card onto the line. Lay a folding fraction strip beneath it to physically confirm its exact placement!
Partner Math Talk
"I know \( \frac{3}{8} \) belongs to the left of \( \frac{1}{2} \) because half of 8 is 4, so \( \frac{3}{8} \) is strictly less than \( \frac{4}{8} \)."
⭐ Level Up Challenges
Level 2: Interleave decimals and fractions on the same string.
Level 3 (Squeeze Play): Find a fraction card that fits strictly between your partner's 2 cards!
Station Reset: Unpeg cards and return clothespins to the basket. Passport Check: Box 2

Target 500 Strike
Strand: Mental Operations, Rounding & Estimation Strategies
4 Number Cubes + Target Arena
Target: 500 | Bullseye Zone: 475 to 525
Rule: Announce mental estimate BEFORE calculating!
Hands-On Action Protocol
1 Lock the Mission: Place the target card (250, 500, or 750) in the center ring.
2 Roll & Group: Roll 4 dice. Form two 2-digit numbers to add or subtract toward the target (e.g., \( 68 + 74 \) or \( 420 + 80 \)).
3 10-Second Mental Lock: Rapidly round both numbers to friendly multiples of 10. Announce your mental estimate. If within 25 of actual, earn a scoring chip!
Partner Math Talk
"I rounded 68 to 70 and 74 to 70. Our mental benchmark sum is 140, which leaves us exactly away from target."
⭐ Level Up Challenges
Level 2: Use compensation: add 3 to make a friendly number, then subtract 3.
Level 3 (Bullseye): Land within 5 points of 500 using at least one 3-digit number!
Station Reset: Collect dice and stack target cards neatly. Passport Check: Box 3
04
Zero-Pair Tug-of-War
Strand: Integers, Opposites & Vertical Number Lines
2-Color Counters + Vertical Track
🟡 Yellow = +1 (Altitude) + 🔴 Red = -1 (Depth) = 0 (Zero Pair)
Opposite values neutralize completely to 0!
Hands-On Action Protocol
1 Deploy Forces: Partner A grabs a handful of positive yellow counters (+1 each). Partner B grabs negative red counters (-1 each).
2 The Zero-Pair Wipeout: Slide 1 yellow chip directly against 1 red chip. Together, they neutralize to 0! Slide all zero pairs off into the neutral tray.
3 Track Movement: Count the remaining uncancelled counters. Move your game token up or down the vertical track from 0 to mark the final elevation!
Partner Math Talk
"We had 7 positives and 4 negatives. The 4 zero-pairs neutralized to 0, leaving a net sum of \( +3 \) above sea level."
⭐ Level Up Challenges
Level 2: Model subtraction like \( (-5) - (-2) \) by physically removing 2 red chips.
Level 3 (Deep Dive): Model \( (+2) - (+5) \) by inserting 3 zero-pairs first!
Station Reset: Separate yellow and red counters into their designated cups. Passport Check: Box 4
