Anatomy of a Fraction
A fraction names equal parts of a whole
3
4
Read: “Three-Fourths”
Area Model
3 of 4 parts shaded
Numerator (Top Number) N = North / Number selected
The count of parts we are talking about or that are shaded.
Fraction Bar (Vinculum)
The horizontal line that divides the numerator from the denominator.
Denominator (Bottom Number) D = Down / Divided total
The total number of equal parts that make up one whole.
Equal Parts
Crucial Rule
Parts that are exactly the same size and area. Fractions are only fair when parts are equal!
Equal
Unequal
Unit Fraction
Numerator = 1
A fraction that represents exactly 1 part of the whole. It is the building block of all fractions!
1/2 1/3 1/4 1/6 1/8
The Whole (1)
All the parts
The entire shape, distance, or group before it is divided. When all parts are present, numerator = denominator.
4/4 = 1 Whole • 6/6 = 1 Whole • 8/8 = 1 Whole
Partition (Action)
Math Verb
To split, cut, or divide a shape or number line into equal-sized pieces.
“Partition the strip into 4 equal fourths.”
Three Ways to Model 2/3
1. Area (Bar) Model
2 of 3 equal bars shaded
2. Circle (Pie) Model
2 of 3 slices shaded
3. Number Line Model
0 1/3 2/3 1
2 hops of size 1/3
Math Talk: Sound Like a Mathematician
Describing a Model: “The whole is partitioned into 4 equal parts. Since 3 parts are shaded, the fraction is 3/4.”
Explaining a Unit Fraction: “I know that 1/6 is a unit fraction because the numerator is 1, representing one single part of the whole.”

Equivalent Fractions
Different numbers, same value!
Two or more fractions that describe the exact same amount of the same-sized whole, even though they are cut into different numbers of pieces.
1/2

2/4
1/4

4/8
1/8

1/8
1/8
Notice: 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 (They all line up at the exact same midpoint!)
Rule 1: Same Denominators
Pieces same size
When bottoms match, simply look at the tops. More pieces means a bigger fraction!
3/6
<
5/6
3 sixths is less than 5 sixths
Rule 2: Same Numerators
Watch out!
When tops match, fewer cuts mean bigger slices! The smaller denominator has bigger pieces!
1/3
>
1/8
1 third is larger than 1 eighth
Benchmark Fraction
Known reference points like 0, 1/2, and 1 used to estimate and compare other fraction sizes.
Whole as a Fraction
Any whole number can be a fraction! 4/1 = 4 wholes, and 3/3 = 1 whole.
Student Quick-Check Challenge
Test your fraction vocabulary!
1. In the fraction 5/8, the number 8 is the:
Numerator Denominator
2. A fraction with a numerator of 1 (like 1/4) is called a:
3. Write >, <, or = :
2/6 4/6 1/2 2/4 1/3 1/8
Third Grade Fraction Checklist:
• Parts must be equal • Denominator = total cuts • Numerator = parts counted • 1/2 is halfway to 1
