Critical Teen Misconceptions
Digit Inversion: Reading 14 as "forty-one" or writing "41" when hearing "fourteen".
Add-Together Error: Seeing 16 and saying \(1 + 6 = 7\) instead of \(10 + 6 = 16\).
Missing Ten-ness: Counting 14 individual single cubes from 1 instead of starting from the completed bundle of 10.
Intervention Response Protocol
Pre-Bundle Anchor: Always hold the bundle of 10 intact in the non-dominant hand; keep it bound with an elastic band.
Language Prompt: Prompt: "How many in the bundle?" Student: "Ten." Prompt: "Count on from ten: 11, 12, 13..."
Finger Frame: Cover the '1' in 15 with a digit-card 10 to prove 15 is 10 hiding beneath.

Explicit Activity Facilitation Scripts
Direct Verbal Modeling
1
Activity 1: Quick Tens Flash & Say
Duration: 3 Mins
Purpose: Eradicate teen-number confusion by training instantaneous perception of 1 bundle (10) plus loose ones.
Teacher:
(Flashes 1 bundle of 10 craft sticks and 4 loose craft sticks for 2 seconds, then shields them.) "What do you see?"
Student:
"I see 10 and 4 ones!"
Teacher:
"Say the whole number sentence."
Student:
"10 and 4 ones is 14!"
If Student Says:
"Five" (counting objects 1+4): Intervene immediately: "Stop! Count the bundle as ONE TEN. Say: 10... (tap loose ones) 11, 12, 13, 14. What number?"
2
Activity 2: Build–Draw–Write & Bundling
Duration: 6 Mins
Purpose: Transitions the student smoothly from Concrete blocks to Representational drawings to Abstract symbols.
Step 1: BUILD
Student takes base-10 rods and unit cubes. To represent 26, student puts 2 rods in the Tens lane and 6 cubes in the Ones lane.
Step 2: DRAW
Student draws quick "sticks and dots" on the mat: 2 vertical line sticks (||) and 6 distinct circular dots (••••••).
Step 3: WRITE
Student records both forms: Numeral: 26, Expanded Form: 20 + 6 = 26, identifying the value of each digit.
The Bundling Rule (10 Ones → 1 Ten):
When loose ones reach 10, student counts them aloud: "1, 2, 3... 10 ones!" Student snaps a rubber band around them or trades for a ten rod. Student states: "Ten loose ones become ONE ten rod."
Weeks 1–5 Mastery Verification Check (Prior to Moving to Phase 2)
Instantly recognizes flashed teen bundles without counting ones from 1 (<2 seconds).
Independently draws sticks and dots accurately for any 2-digit number up to 50.
Correctly verbalizes expanded notation (e.g., "34 is 30 plus 4, not 3 plus 4").
Demonstrates physical bundling: groups 10 single units and trades for 1 ten rod smoothly.

Weeks 6 – 10
Operations & Numbers to 1000
Phase 2 Fluency Targets & 3-Digit Supporting Skills
Core + Extended
1. Place Value Toss:
Dice swap dynamics; proving tens hold 10× value of ones (36 vs 63).
2. "Make 100" Games:
Mental 2-digit bridging to 100 using friendly decade jumps.
3. 3-Digit Bridge to 1000:
Digit values (H, T, O), reading names, and writing standard form up to 1000.
1
Place Value Toss & Swap (Weeks 6–7)
4 Mins
Roll & Swap: Student rolls 2 dice (e.g. 3 and 7). Builds 37 , then swaps to build 73 .
Verbal Cue: "Which is greater?" Student: "73 is greater because 7 tens is 70, but 3 tens is only 30. The tens digit decides!"
2
"Make 100" Card Game (Weeks 8–9)
5 Mins
Goal: Draw two 0–9 cards (e.g. 6 and 4 \(\rightarrow\) make 64). Calculate distance to 100.
Mental Jump: "64 plus 6 reaches 70. 70 plus 30 reaches 100. Total distance is \(30 + 6 = 36\)!"
3
3-Digit Value, Reading & Standard Form to 1000 (Weeks 9–10)
6 Mins
Digit Value:
Point to 548 . Prompt: "What is the value of the 5?" Student: "5 hundreds = 500." "The 4?" "4 tens = 40." "The 8?" "8 ones = 8."
Read to 1000:
Cover tens/ones: read "five hundred" , uncover tail: "forty-eight" . Say together: "Five hundred forty-eight." (Explicitly eradicate the word "and").
Standard Form:
For "Seven hundred six" : Model placing 7 in Hundreds, 0 in Tens (zero placeholder) , 6 in Ones \(\rightarrow\) 706 (prevent writing 76 or 7006).
