Regrouping Trade Station Lesson Plan
Multisensory Subtraction with Regrouping via Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) Sequence
Instructional Objective
Students will physically unbundle and exchange 1 Ten rod for 10 One units at the Trade Bank, record the exchange with visual slash-and-write notation, and compute 2-digit subtraction problems with 80% accuracy over 3 consecutive sessions.
Sample IEP Goal Target
"When presented with two-digit subtraction problems requiring regrouping, [Student] will use tactile base-ten organizers to complete trades and compute differences with 80% accuracy in 4 out of 5 measured trials."
Trade Station Materials & Workspace Setup
Tactile Manipulatives Base-ten rods (Tens) & unit cubes (Ones), or textured foam tokens. Place 10 units in each "Exchange Cup."
Visual Organizers Laminated "Trade Station Activity Mat", two-color dry-erase markers (Red for Trades, Navy for Values).
Multisensory Rhyme Card Visual poster displayed: "More on top? No need to stop! More on the floor? Go next door, trade 1 Ten for 10 more!"
Phase 1: Explicit CRA Modeling ("I Do" — 12 Mins)
Example: 52 − 27
Step 1
Build the Minuend (Top Number): "We build the top number only: 52 has 5 Tens rods and 2 Ones units on our mat. The bottom number (27) is our 'take-away' target."
Step 2
Inspect the Ones & Recite Rhyme: "Look at the Ones column: we have 2 units. We need to subtract 7. Can I take 7 from 2? No! More on the floor? Go next door! "
Step 3
The Bank Trade (Concrete): "I take 1 Ten rod from the Tens house and bring it to the Trade Station Bank. The Bank exchanges it for exactly 10 single units. I add them to my 2 units. How many Ones now? 10 + 2 = 12 Ones!"
Step 4
Recording the Trade (Representational): "Cross out the 5 Tens: write 4 above it. Cross out the 2 Ones: write 12 above it. Our value is still 52 (40 + 12 = 52), but now we have enough Ones!"
Step 5
Subtract Ones, Then Tens (Abstract): "Now take away 7 units from 12: 12 − 7 = 5. Now take away 2 Tens from 4 Tens: 4 − 2 = 2. Difference is 25!"

Guided Station Routine & Intervention Protocols
Phase 2: Partner Trade ("We Do" — 15 Mins)
Assign collaborative roles for active engagement and peer verbal scaffolding:
Role A (The Builder): Places minuend blocks in the place-value frames and verifies physical subtraction.
Role B (The Bank Auditor): Audits whether a trade is needed, enforces the 1 Ten = 10 Ones trade rule, and records the slash-notation.
Rotate roles after every 2 completed problems.
Concrete-to-Representational Transition
Gradually fade physical manipulatives as students demonstrate mastery:
Level 1 (Concrete): Full block exchange at the physical bank.
Level 2 (Representational): Draw place-value sticks (Tens) and dots (Ones), circle 1 Ten stick and arrow it to draw 10 dots.
Level 3 (Abstract): Numeric algorithm with color-coded trade boxes.
SPED Misconception Diagnostic Table
Observed Student Error Root Cognitive Cause Immediate Corrective Intervention Smaller-from-Larger Flip (e.g., 52 − 27 = 35) Reverses digits in Ones column (7 − 2 = 5) to avoid regrouping difficulty. Physically block the Tens. Put only 2 cubes down: "Hand me 7 cubes from here. Can you? No, you can't invent cubes!" Vanishing Ten (Takes 10, doesn't decrement) Working memory overload; completes the addition to Ones without subtracting from Tens. Enforce the "Toll Gate": The bank vault will not open until the Ten rod is physically dropped into the exchange chute. Over-Regrouping (Trades when not needed) Mechanical habituation; regroups reflexively on every problem (e.g., 58 − 23). Enforce the "Stop Light Check": Yellow light question: "Do you already have enough ones in your hand?"
Tiered Accommodations for Diverse Learners
Motor & Fine Motor Use magnetic Ten-frames, textured velvet tokens, or unifix snap-cubes that snap apart easily with grip assistance.
Visual & Spatial Processing High-contrast color channels (Tens = Blue, Ones = Amber). Highlight column borders with tactile puffy paint.
Attention & Executive Function Laminated 4-step checklist with self-erasing dry-erase checkboxes to keep track of subtraction phase.
Quick Progress Monitoring Criteria (Scale 1–4)
1: Novice
Subtracts bottom from top; cannot determine trade need.
2: Emerging
Executes trade with physical blocks; needs prompting for notation.
3: Proficient
Independently trades & records slashes accurately; minor calc error.
4: Mastered
Explains place value exchange verbally; solves accurately on paper.

Step 2
Trade at Bank
Take 1 Ten rod. Get 10 single ones.
3 + 10 = 13 Ones!
Step 3
Slash & Record
Cross out 4, write 3. Cross 3, write 13.
3 Tens & 13 Ones
Step 4
Subtract!
13 − 8 = 5 Ones.
3 − 1 = 2 Tens.
Total = 25 🎉
💡 Notice: 3 Tens + 13 Ones is still 43! Nothing was lost!
