Part 1: Key Vocabulary & Definitions
1. The Coordinate Plane
Two perpendicular lines: the horizontal line is the -axis, and the vertical line is the -axis.
Intersection: Origin at (, ).
2. Ordered Pair (x, y)
• x-coord: Move (+) or (−).
• y-coord: Move (+) or (−).
Order matters: x is 1st, y is 2nd!
3. The 4 Quadrants
The 4 regions are numbered using Roman numerals moving in a direction.
Trick: "Walk before you " (x then y).

Quadrant I ( , )
Quadrant II ( , )
Quadrant III ( , )
Quadrant IV ( , )
Points on Axes: NOT in Any Quadrant!
If one coordinate is 0, the point sits directly on an axis line.
If y = 0 → (x, 0) On the -axis
If x = 0 → (0, y) On the -axis
1
How to Plot a Point (x, y)
-
- Always start at the with coordinates (0, 0).
-
- Move along x-axis: go (+) or (−).
-
- From there, move y: go (+) or (−).
-
- Plot a solid and write the letter label.
2
How to Locate & Name a Point
-
- Find the dot on the coordinate grid.
-
- Look straight to the horizontal axis for the -value.
-
- Look straight to the vertical axis for the -value.
-
- Write inside parentheses with comma: .
Part 4: Guided Practice & Check
Use points marked on the grid above
| Point | x-value | y-value | Ordered Pair (x, y) | Quadrant or Axis |
|---|
| A | 3 | 2 | (3, 2) | Quadrant I (Example) |
| B | | | | |
| C | | | | |
| D | | | | |
| E | | | | |

Coordinate Geometry • Scaffolded Guided Notes Rule of Thumb: (x, y) → Crawl (horizontal) before you fly (vertical)!
