Lab Instructions
Visit each station. Look at the water level. Find the 5L benchmark (the tape line). Start at 5 and count up to find the total volume.

Benchmarks & Counting On
Materials Needed
Clear bins, Masking tape, Blue food dye (optional), 1L beakers.
Lab Preparation
1. Mark the Scale: Use masking tape to mark every 1 liter on your containers. Use a thicker piece of tape (or a different color) for the 5L line.
2. Station Setup: Fill 5 containers with different volumes of water (Suggested: 6L, 8L, 5L, 9L, 7L).
3. Visualize: Add 1-2 drops of blue food coloring to make the water level highly visible for students.
4. Benchmarks: Ensure labels (A-E) are clearly visible at each station.
Lesson Procedure
1. Warm-Up & Motivation (5 min)
Slides 1-2
Practice skip counting by 5s. Ask: "If I have 5 pennies and you give me 2 more, do I need to count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... 6, 7? Or can I just start at 5?" Connect this to measuring volume.
2. Video Case Study (5 min)
Slides 3-4
Play the Matholia video. Pause at 0:36. Have students predict the volume. Ask: "How did the narrator count so fast?" Highlight the use of the 5L benchmark.
3. Station Rotation (20 min)
Slide 5
Students move in groups. At each station, they must identify the 5L mark, place their finger on it, and count up (e.g., "Five... six... seven!"). Record on the Lab Sheet.
Key Discussion Questions
"What happens if the water is BELOW the 5L line? Can we still use the benchmark?"
"Why do you think scientists use 5 and 10 as benchmarks instead of 3 or 4?"
Common Misconception
Students may start at 5 but forget to count the next line as 6 (they might say "5, 5, 6..."). Model pointing and counting clearly.
Support
Provide containers where the volume is always exactly 5L or 6L to build confidence before larger numbers.
Extension
Ask students to estimate the volume if 1L was removed or added to their current station measurement.

Station Measurements
The measurements for Stations A-E will vary based on your lab setup. Use this space to record your actual volumes before students begin.
| Station | Expected Total Volume | Counting Strategy Example |
|---|
| Station A | Teacher's choice (e.g., 7L) | "5, 6, 7" |
| Station B | Teacher's choice (e.g., 9L) | "5, 6, 7, 8, 9" |
| Station C | Teacher's choice (e.g., 6L) | "5, 6" |
| Station D | Teacher's choice (e.g., 8L) | "5, 6, 7, 8" |
| Station E | Teacher's choice (e.g., 10L) | "5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10" |
Reflection Question Key
1. Which station had the most water?
Answer depends on the teacher's setup (the station with the highest volume level).
2. Why did you start counting at 5 instead of 1?
Sample Correct Answers:
- It is faster to start at 5.
- Starting at a benchmark (5L) saves time because we already know there are 5 liters below that line.
- It is more efficient than counting every single line from the bottom.
- I already know where the 5 line is, so I only have to count the extra liters.
Student Mastery Checklist
Identifies 5L benchmark correctly.
Starts counting from 5, not 1.
Correctly counts on by 1s (liters).
Records volume with correct units (L).
