Regrouping Reporter Teacher Guide The Regrouping Reporter
Teacher Facilitation Guide • Grade 2 Math
Objective
Students will connect the physical action of regrouping (trading 10 ones for 1 ten) to the written vertical addition algorithm, proving their understanding through investigative sketching.
Materials Needed
"The Reporter" Slide Deck
"The Reporter" Student Worksheet

Instructional Sequence
1
Warm-up: Friends of 10 (5 min)
Use the Friends of 10 Flashcards . Show them rapidly. Students should shout out the "partner" that makes 10. This primes their brains to look for "tens" inside other numbers.
2
Video Investigation (5 min)
Play the "Addition to 20" video. Use these specific Pause Points :
0:49 (The Problem): Pause when 12 blocks are in the ones house. Ask: "Is it okay to have 12 blocks in the ones house? What is the rule?"
1:05 (The Prediction): Pause when the 10 blocks are circled. Ask: "What can we trade these for?"
1:15 (The Connection): As the rod moves. Ask: "Why did the shape change? Why did it move?"
3
Activity: The Reporter (25 min)
Hand out The Reporter Worksheet . Explain that as "Math Reporters," they must find evidence of the regrouping moment.
"Reporters, your job is to solve the math and then DRAW the proof. Circle those 10 ones that are being swapped for a ten rod!"
Critical Inquiry Questions
The "Why":
"If I trade 10 ones for 1 ten, do I have more blocks, fewer blocks, or the same amount of math power?"
The "Where":
"On the paper, where does that 'ten rod' go when we write the answer?" (Direct them to the carry/top space).

The "Swap" Moment
Step 1
Find 10 ones that are "making a mess" in the Ones house.
Step 2
Trade them for 1 "Ten Rod" and move it to the Tens column.
Mission: The Reporter
1
Solve the vertical math problem with your pencil.
2
Draw dots for the "Ones" on your investigation pad.
3
Circle 10 ones with a Colored Pencil to prove the swap!

Reporter's Final Conclusion:
The "Swap Rule" means that when I have 10 ones, I MUST trade them for 1 ten rod.
This makes the math easier because we are working with tens instead of messy ones.
