Essential Question
How do we determine whether we need to regroup in the ones, tens, both, or neither when adding three-digit numbers?
Mastery Goal
Students will solve 3-digit addition problems with 80%+ accuracy on mixed regrouping scenarios.

1 Launch: The Expedition Elevation Challenge (10 min) Hook & Activation
Prompt to Class: "Climbers, imagine we are ascending Mount Granite! Yesterday we climbed 342 meters to Base Camp 1. Today we climbed another 235 meters. How high are we now?"
Key Script: "Before we pick up our pencils, look closely at each column. 2 ones + 5 ones = 7 ones. Did we break 10? No! 4 tens + 3 tens = 7 tens. Did we break 10? No! This is what we call a Smooth Path problem—no regrouping required. But what happens when the slope gets steeper?"
2 Model: The 4 Terrain Types (15 min) Direct Instruction (I Do)
Terrain A: Smooth Path (No Regroup)
342 + 235 = 577
Model right-to-left addition. Emphasize checking each column sum against 10.
Terrain B: Ones Gear Shift
458 + 216 = 674
8 + 6 = 14 ones. Trade 10 ones for 1 ten. Carry 1 above tens column.
Terrain C: Tens Gear Shift
384 + 271 = 655
4 + 1 = 5 ones (no regroup). 8 + 7 = 15 tens. Trade 10 tens for 1 hundred.
Terrain D: Double Steep Ridge
476 + 287 = 763
Regrouping twice! 6+7=13 (carry 1), then 1+7+8=16 tens (carry 1 to hundreds).
3 Partner Trail Check: Predict First, Calculate Second (15 min) Guided Practice (We Do)
Pairs display mini-whiteboards. Teacher reveals a problem. Partner A has 10 seconds to state the Terrain Type (None, Ones, Tens, or Both). Partner B calculates the solution. They swap roles every problem. Teacher Circulates: Check that students are not mechanically carrying when sum is < 10.

When Do We Regroup?
If any place value column equals 10 or more, we must pack a bundle to trade up!
• 10 Ones = Trade for 1 Ten
• 10 Tens = Trade for 1 Hundred
When Do We Keep Moving?
If the sum in a column is 9 or less, no trade is needed! Write it down and keep hiking.
• Smooth Path = No regrouping
• Always start adding from right to left (Ones first)!
Always ask yourself before calculating: "Does this column reach 10?"
