Topic: Converting Standard Form to Slope-Intercept Form
Learning Objective
Students will be able to convert linear equations from Standard Form (\(Ax + By = C\)) to Slope-Intercept Form (\(y = mx + b\)) by isolating the \(y\) variable.

Warm-up: 5 min
Video/Discussion: 10 min
Guided Practice: 15 min
Independent Practice: 10 min
Closure: 5 min
1. Warm-up (5 min)
Display the first three problems on the slides. Students identify \(m\) and \(b\) from equations already in \(y = mx + b\). This activates prior knowledge of what the final goal looks like.
Key Check: Ensure students realize that if there is no \(b\) term, the y-intercept is 0. If there is no coefficient in front of \(x\), the slope is 1.
2. Video Analysis (10 min)
Play the video: Slope Intercept Form Y=mx+b | Algebra (0:00 - 3:59).
Pause at 0:20: Ask, "How do we get \(y\) by itself?" Let students suggest "subtracting \(2x\)."
Pause at 1:25: Discuss the result: \(y = -2x + 3\). Ask students to identify \(m\) and \(b\).
Pause at 3:15: Discuss how a whole number slope like \(-2\) is written as \(-2/1\) for "rise over run."
3. Guided Practice (15 min)
Work through two examples where the \(y\) coefficient is 1. Model the "moving" of the \(x\)-term and the sign change.
Ex 1: \(x + y = 5\)
→ \(y = -x + 5\)
Ex 2: \(4x + y = -2\)
→ \(y = -4x - 2\)
4. Independent Practice (10 min)
Students work on the Standard to Slope Worksheet . Monitor for common errors, especially forgetting to change the sign of the \(x\)-term when moving it across the equals sign.
5. Closure (5 min)
Distribute the Sign Change Exit Ticket . This targets the conceptual "why" behind the algebraic manipulation of inverse operations.
Common Misconceptions
The "Magic" Sign Change: Students may change the sign of the \(x\)-term without understanding they are subtracting it from both sides.
Ordering: Students often write \(y = b + mx\) (e.g., \(y = 3 - 2x\)). Encourage them to put the \(x\)-term first to match the standard \(y = mx + b\) template.
Negative \(y\): If the equation is \(2x - y = 3\), students often forget the negative stays with the \(y\) after moving \(2x\). (Note: This lesson focuses on positive \(y\) coefficients, but be ready for questions).

Warm-up
\(y = 3x + 5\)
\(m = 3\)
\(b = 5\)
\(y = -2x - 7\)
\(m = -2\)
\(b = -7\)
\(y = \frac{1}{2}x + 4\)
\(m = 1/2\)
\(b = 4\)
Guided Practice
\(x + y = 5\)
- x - x
y = -x + 5
\(4x + y = -2\)
- 4x - 4x
y = -4x - 2
Independent Practice
\(y = -x + 10\)
\(m = -1\)
\(b = 10\)
\(y = -5x + 2\)
\(m = -5\)
\(b = 2\)
\(y = -3x - 4\)
\(m = -3\)
\(b = -4\)
\(y = -x - 1\)
\(m = -1\)
\(b = -1\)
\(y = -8x + 0\)
\(m = -8\)
\(b = 0\)
Exit Ticket Sample Response:
"We are using the inverse operation of subtraction to isolate y. Subtracting x from both sides moves it from the left to the right, changing its sign from positive to negative."
