Algebra & Functions Domain (8.AF.1 – 8.AF.6) • Linear Modeling, Representations & Qualitative Graphing
Unit Preview Statement
Ready for syllabus, curriculum maps, or family communication
In this 12-day unit aligned to Indiana 8th grade standards (8.AF.1–8.AF.6), students explore functions as predictable mathematical rules pairing each input with exactly one output. Learners investigate relations across tables, graphs, equations, and verbal descriptions before distinguishing between linear functions with constant rates of change (y = mx + b) and nonlinear relationships. In the unit’s second half, students construct linear models from real-world data, identify initial values and rates of change, and interpret qualitative graphical features including intervals of increase, decrease, and constancy. Supported by strategic review cycles, a mid-unit quiz, and a comprehensive final test, students build the conceptual depth and analytical fluency needed for high school algebra.
Target Indiana Standards
- 8.AF.1: Define a function as a rule mapping each input to exactly one output.
- 8.AF.2: Compare properties of functions across multiple representations.
- 8.AF.3: Identify linear functions (y = mx + b) vs. nonlinear functions.
- 8.AF.4: Describe qualitative features (increase/decrease) & sketch graphs.
- 8.AF.6: Construct linear function models; find rate of change & initial value.
Essential Inquiries
- • How can we determine whether a given relation represents a true mathematical function?
- • What advantages does each functional representation (table, graph, equation, verbal) offer when solving problems?
- • How do rate of change and initial value help us interpret real-world linear phenomena?
