A foundational kindergarten math lesson where students develop one-to-one correspondence and cardinality by counting out exact groups of objects from larger collections to match numerals 1 through 10.
"My numeral badge says 5. My goal is to get ONLY 5 bananas."
Step 2: Move One-by-One Move items across into the tray, chanting slowly: "1... 2... 3... 4... 5—STOP! I hit my target number. My hands go in my lap!" Emphasize leaving extras in the storage bowl.
Step 3: Cardinality Check Point to the tray: "How many bananas are in the tray?" Lead students to answer: "Five!" without recounting from 1. "The last word told us the total amount!"
Foundational Principle: Move items out of the group, do not just point within the crowd!
Students color only the target number of animals in each cage. Remind students to cross out or ignore the remaining animals. In Section 2, students draw dots into ten-frames matching animal food bowls.
Page 2 Protocol (Circling Sets & Drawing):
Students loop the designated quantity from scattered groups, record how many remain outside, and draw their own specimen collections for numerals 5, 7, and 4.
Tiered Differentiation Strategies
Tier 2 Support / Intervention
Constrain numeral range to 1–5.
Use a 5-frame line instead of 10-frame.
Have student physically slide counters onto worksheet pictures before coloring.
On-Grade Level Practice
Full numeral range 1–10.
Practice with scattered non-linear arrays.
Have students verbalize the last counted number to confirm total.
Enrichment / Extension
Count out sets from 11–20 with double ten-frames.
Pose comparison questions: "Which animal got more treats? By how many?"
Calculate how many more needed to reach 10.
Observational Checklist Look-Fors
✔ Does student stop counting when reaching target numeral?
✔ Does each spoken number tag correlate with exactly one object?
✔ Can student answer "How many?" without recounting?
Closing Carpet Debrief (5 Mins)
Gather on the carpet. Hold up numeral 7: "Rangers, tell me your secret! If your card says 7, how do you know not to keep counting up to 8 or 9?"
Expected Student Takeaway: "I listen for the number 7, and when I say it, my hands stop!"
Assessment Alignment: Meets CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4 and K.CC.B.5 mastery milestones.
