Rounding Radar: Decimal Precision
NY-5.NBT.4
Duration: 60 Minutes
Domain Number & Ops Base Ten
Target Units Wholes, 10ths, 100ths
Core Strategy Vertical Number Lines
Grouping Whole, Pairs, Solo
Learning Objectives
• Target Place Value: Identify lower and upper benchmark numbers for decimals to thousandths.
• Midpoint Reasoning: Calculate precise midpoints between benchmarks to justify rounding decisions.
• Mathematical Argument: Explain why a decimal rounds up or stays using place value logic (MP.2, MP.6).
Key Vocabulary & MP Connections
Benchmark: Multiples of the targeted unit bounding the number (e.g., 4.3 & 4.4).
Midpoint: The exact halfway value (ends in 5 in the next place value).
Precision: Degree of accuracy defined by the requested place.
MP.2 Abstract Reasoning MP.6 Precision
Diagnostic Misconceptions & Instructional Remedies
Misconception 1: "Sequential Domino Rounding"
Rounding 3.448 to tenths by first rounding to hundredths (3.45) then rounding to 3.5.
Remedy: Direct students strictly to the benchmarks \(3.4\) and \(3.5\). Midpoint is \(3.450\). Since \(3.448 < 3.450\), it rounds to \(3.4\).
Misconception 2: "Truncation / Ignoring Value"
Believing "rounding down" means subtracting 1 or erasing decimal places without comparing to midpoint.
Remedy: Rephrase "round down" as "stays at the lower benchmark." The number is physically closer to the lower baseline.
Phase 1: Launch & Warm-Up (10 Minutes)
Hook & Visual Setup
Scenario: Autonomous Drone Telemetry. Present the scenario: "A weather drone is hovering at an altitude of 4.37 kilometers. Air traffic control requires altitude rounded to the nearest tenth of a kilometer. Should air control record 4.3 km or 4.4 km?"
Step A: "Between which two tenths does 4.37 lie?" (4.3 & 4.4).
Step B: "What is the exact midpoint between 4.3 & 4.4?" (4.35).
Step C: "4.37 is above midpoint 4.35, so it rounds to 4.4 km."
Materials Required: Student Practice Worksheet, Vertical Number Line Strips, Dry-Erase Sleeves, Exit Tickets Page 1 of 2

Phase 2: Explore & Guided Model (20 Minutes)
3-Step Radar Protocol
1. Set Benchmarks
Identify the specified unit. Lower benchmark keeps target place, upper adds 1 unit.
Ex: 7.284 to hundredths
Lower: 7.28 | Upper: 7.29
2. Find Midpoint
The halfway point always has a 5 in the next smaller place value.
Between 7.280 & 7.290:
Midpoint = 7.285
3. Plot & Round
Plot number on line. If on or above midpoint, round up; if below, keep lower.
7.284 < 7.285
Rounds to: 7.28
Phase 3: Partner Practice (18 Min)
Distribute the Rounding Radar Practice Worksheet . Students work in pairs on Sections 1 & 2, verbally explaining their midpoint justifications.
Check For: Students confusing place value names (tenths vs. hundredths) and ensure vertical benchmark labels include all whole-number values.
Phase 4: Synthesis & Debrief (12 Min)
Debrief tricky numbers like 9.96 rounded to tenths (requires regrouping: 10.0). Emphasize why the trailing zero must be written to indicate precision.
Prompt: "Why is 10.0 required instead of 10 when rounding to tenths?" (Shows measurement to the tenths place).
Tiered Differentiation Strategies
Intervention / Support
• Use pre-scaled vertical lines with 10 ticks.
• Use money models for hundredths ($3.48).
• Color code: highlight target unit in yellow.
Multilingual Learners
• Place-value chart highlighting "-ths" suffix.
• Frame: "The number __ is between __ and __. It is [closer to / above midpoint], so it rounds to __."
Extension / Challenge
• Find the lowest & greatest 3-decimal number that rounds to 4.8.
• Multi-target: Round 19.995 to tenths and hundredths.
Observational Rubric for Practice & Exit Ticket
Level Observable Student Behavior Immediate Next Step 1 - Developing Cannot identify bounding benchmarks or confuses tenth/hundredth value. Regroup with place value disks & vertical meter stick. 2 - Approaching Finds benchmarks accurately but errs on midpoint or drops trailing zeros. Practice renaming decimals with equivalent zeros (5.6 = 5.60). 3 - Proficient Consistently finds benchmarks, midpoints, and rounds accurately across any place. Assign telemetry multi-step application tasks on practice sheet.
