Key Anatomy
x-axis: The horizontal line (\(\longleftrightarrow\)). Left is \((-)\), Right is \((+)\).
y-axis: The vertical line (\(\updownarrow\)). Down is \((-)\), Up is \((+)\).
Origin: The center \((0, 0)\). Where every coordinate count begins!
Ordered Pair \((x, y)\)
\(x\)
Horizontal (Left/Right)
,
\(y\)
Vertical (Down/Up)
“Run horizontally before you jump vertically!”
The 4 Quadrants (Counterclockwise) Roman Numerals I - IV
x y Quadrant II ( −, + ) Left & Up Quadrant I ( +, + ) Right & Up Quadrant III ( −, − ) Left & Down Quadrant IV ( +, − ) Right & Down Origin (0,0)

How to PLOT a Point \((x, y)\)
Walkthrough: Plot \(P(-3, 4)\)
Step 1:
Start at Origin \((0,0)\). Rest your pencil at center.
Step 2:
Move horizontal (\(x\)): Since \(x = -3\), count 3 units Left . (Do not make a mark yet!)
Step 3:
Move vertical (\(y\)): From there, since \(y = +4\), count 4 units Up .
Step 4:
Mark & Label: Draw a clear dot and write \(P(-3, 4)\).
Quick Check: \((-3, 4)\) is in Quadrant II (Left & Up \(\rightarrow -,+\)).
2
How to READ a Plotted Point
Finding the coordinates of a dot on the grid:
Step 1:
Find \(x\): Look vertically straight up/down to the horizontal x-axis . Record this number.
Step 2:
Find \(y\): Look horizontally straight across to the vertical y-axis . Record this number.
Step 3:
Format pair: Write inside parentheses with a comma: \((x, y)\).
Step 4:
Check signs: Confirm the signs match the quadrant location.
Caution: Order matters! \((5, -2) \neq (-2, 5)\).
Points Directly on the Axes (No Quadrant!)
On x-axis: \((x, 0)\)
\(y = 0\) because there is zero vertical movement. e.g., \((4, 0)\), \((-2, 0)\)
On y-axis: \((0, y)\)
\(x = 0\) because there is zero horizontal movement. e.g., \((0, 3)\), \((0, -5)\)
Top 3 Common Traps
1. Flipped coordinates: Remember alphabetical: \(x\) before \(y\).
2. Sign slips: Left = \((-)\), Down = \((-)\), Right = \((+)\), Up = \((+)\).
3. Counting from origin: Always begin counting at \((0,0)\)!
Golden Rule: Run along the ground (\(x\)), then jump or dive (\(y\))!

Axis Reflection Solution:
Why are points E and F not in any quadrant?
Answer: The axes form the boundaries that separate the quadrants. Since points on the axes have a coordinate of zero (e.g. \(x=0\) or \(y=0\)), zero is neither positive nor negative, so the points lie on the axis lines themselves and not inside any quadrant.
