Regrouping Rangers Teacher Guide
Regrouping Rangers
Teacher Facilitation Guide
Subject: Math
Grade: 2nd
Duration: 35-40 min
Mission Objective
Students will identify when regrouping is necessary in subtraction by comparing digits in the ones place. Students will formulate the rule: "If the digit on top is smaller, you must regroup."
Materials
- Regrouping Rangers Slides
- Subtraction Detective Cards
- The Sorting Station Mat
- Base-10 blocks (optional)
Key Vocabulary

Lesson Procedure

Warm-Up: Thumbs Up/Down
Teacher says subtraction problems involving only the ones column (e.g., "3 minus 7", "8 minus 2").
- Thumbs Up: We have enough (No regrouping needed).
- Thumbs Down: We need help (Regrouping needed).
Prompt: "If I have 3 cookies, can I give you 7? Thumbs up or down?"

Video: The Dilemma (Timestamp 0:45)
Watch the provided video. Pause at 0:45 when the narrator realizes they can't subtract the ones.
"Hmm. We can't take away 7 ones from 3 ones."
Discussion Question: "What is the trigger that tells the narrator they need to regroup?"

Activity: The Sorting Game
Students work in pairs with 10 subtraction cards and a Sorting Mat.
- Sort: Place each card in "Needs Regrouping" or "No Regrouping". Do not solve yet!
- Check: Partners must explain to each other why they put the card there.
- Solve: Choose 2 cards from the "Needs Regrouping" pile to solve on the bottom of the mat.
5
Closure: The Golden Rule
Review the sorting as a class. Ask: "What is the secret trick for knowing if we need to regroup?"
"If the digit on TOP is SMALLER, you must REGROUP!"
Mission Debrief Tips
Common Misconception
Students may subtract "upwards" (e.g., 3 - 7 becomes 7 - 3 = 4). Emphasize that we must always start with the top number (the minuend).
Differentiation
Provide base-10 blocks for students struggling to visualize the "trade". For high-fliers, add 3-digit problems to their sorting pile.
