Pairs to Ten Song
Sing a catchy "Friends of Ten" song to activate prior knowledge. Suggestion (Tune: Twinkle Twinkle):

Pause: Hand out physical counters. Ask students to model "3" and find out how many more make "10" before playing.
1:00
Pause: Ask: "Did counting to 10 give us the answer for the blank spot? Or do we need to count something else now?"
1:50
Pause: Discuss the equal sign. Ask: "Why did he count both sides at the end? What does equal mean?"

Gallery Walk & Extension
Gallery Walk: Students place rainbows on desks and walk around to "check" the math of their peers.
Extension Activity
Provide fingerpaint in two colors. Have students create fingerprint "caterpillars" or "balloons" where the two colors add up to 10. Label with an equation: \(5 + 5 = 10\).
