Only add the numerators: 1 + 2 = 3
Why Doesn't the 4 Change?
✓
The slice size stayed the same!
Both pieces are fourths of a pumpkin.
✓
The whole still takes 4 pieces!
We are simply counting how many fourths we have.
Golden Mantra: "Add the top, keep the bottom!" Slide 2 of 5

How to Cut & Build with Colors
Hands-On Instructions
Step 1: Snip
Cut the Dashed Line
Cut across the red dashed line to separate your cutout ribs from the workmat.
Cut across here first!
Step 2: Match
Follow the Colors
Orange ribs match the 1st fraction. Gold ribs match the 2nd fraction.
1st Fraction
2nd Fraction
Step 3: Paste
Fill the Pumpkin
Paste the ribs into the pumpkin frame. Count the total filled to get your sum!
Total glued parts = New Numerator!
Use just a tiny dab of glue for each paper rib! Slide 3 of 5

Three Harvest Levels
Choose Your Patch
Level 1: Sprout
Halves & Thirds
Big, friendly pieces! Great for building fraction confidence with halves, thirds, and fourths.
Example: 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3
Pre-filled bottom numbers
Level 2: Patch
Fourths, 6ths & 8ths
Core addition practice! Paste ribs into 4, 6, and 8-segment pumpkins plus harvest equations.
Example: 2/6 + 3/6 = 5/6
Full equation solving
Level 3: Challenge
Missing & Overflow
Solve missing addends, add 3 parts, and handle improper fractions that spill past 1 whole pumpkin!
3/4 + 2/4 = 5/4 = 1 1/4
Advanced multi-step math

Beware the Denominator Trap!
Common Mistake Alert
Does 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/8?
NO! Never add denominators together!
The Common Mistake
1/4 + 2/4 = 3/8
Adding 4 + 4 gives 8, which changes the size of the pieces!
The Correct Method
1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4
The pieces are still fourths! 1 piece + 2 pieces = 3 pieces of fourths!
Harvest Checklist: ✓ Ribs glued in pumpkin ✓ Numerators added ✓ Denominator unchanged
