Lesson Sequence
1. Hook: The 60-Second Sprint
5 MIN
Launch the slide deck to the Time Trial slide. Students see a series of decimals. They must mentally multiply by 100 as fast as possible.
- Keep the energy high! Shout out common patterns (e.g., "0.5 is 50!").
- Goal: Activate the "multiply by 100" mental pathway before introducing the visual shortcut.
2. Discovery: The Two-Step Slide
5 MIN
Watch the "Decimal to Percent" video. Focus specifically on the 0:19-0:29 mark.
"Why do we move the decimal exactly two places? Because we are multiplying by 100—two zeros means two shifts!"
3. Main Event: Percent War
25 MIN
Distribute the "War Zone" instructions and card decks. Pairs split the deck evenly.
Rule A: Slap Match
If the flipped decimal and percent are equal (0.25 and 25%), first to slap the pile wins all cards.
Rule B: High Card
If they aren't equal, the player with the higher value (after conversion) wins the round.
4. Pro-Tips: Strategy Session
5 MIN
Ask the "Generals" (winners) to share their secrets.
Prompt: "What was your mental trick for the 'ghost zeros' (e.g., converting 0.4 to 40%)?"
5. Boss Level: Closure
5 MIN
Display the "Championship Question" on the board: "Convert 0.0075 and 1.5 into percents." Students must write answers on a sticky note to leave the room.
Math Foundations
The word "Percent" comes from per centum, meaning "per hundred." Converting a decimal to a percent is functionally equivalent to representing that number as a fraction with a denominator of 100. Moving the decimal two places to the right is the operational shortcut for multiplying by 10^2.
Misconception Alert
Missing Zeros: Students may turn 0.4 into 4% instead of 40%. Emphasize the "place-holder zero."
Tiny Decimals: 0.005 becomes 0.5%. Students often assume percents must be whole numbers.
Differentiation
Scaffolding (Tier 2/3)
Provide the Anchor Chart at their desk. Allow them to use a dry-erase marker to literally draw the "jumps" on the Percent War cards before playing.
Extension (G/T)
Add "Complex Cards" to their deck: 1/8, 225%, or 0.33... (repeating). Challenge them to play at double speed.
ESL/ELL Support
Use the "Jump" and "Move" hand gestures consistently. Ensure they understand "equivalent" means "same value."

GAME MODE: PERCENT WAR
The Slap Match
Flip your cards at the same time. If they are EQUIVALENT (e.g., 0.5 and 50%), the first player to slap the pile wins all the cards!
The High Value
If they aren't equal, the player with the HIGHER VALUE wins the round.
Example: 0.8 is BIGGER than 75%.
Ready? Divide the deck and begin.

Mission
Percent War
The Setup
- 1 Find a partner.
- 2 Shuffle the deck thoroughly.
- 3 Deal all cards face down.
- 4 Keep your stack face down! Do not look at your cards.
The Objective
Capture the entire deck by converting decimals faster and identifying higher values than your opponent.
Equipment
1 Deck of Percent/Decimal Cards, 1 Anchor Chart (Ref), 1 Pencil/Paper (Scratch).
Combat Rules
Standard Round
Capture by Value
Both players flip one card. Convert both to the same format (both % or both decimal).
Player A: 0.6 Player B: 45%
Conversion: 0.6 = 60%. 60% > 45%.
Player A wins the round!
Slap Match
Capture by Speed
If the cards are EQUIVALENT (they have the same value), the first player to SLAP the pile wins all cards in the center!
0.25 25%
SLAP THE PILE!
Be careful! If you slap a non-match, you must give your opponent two cards from your stack.
Tie Breaker
If you flip the SAME card type (e.g., both 0.5), it's a TIE!
Place 3 cards down, then flip a 4th.
Higher value takes the whole massive pile!
