Mastering Parallelogram Properties
Mission Objectives
1
Identify and define the six key properties of parallelograms.
2
Set up and solve algebraic equations based on geometric relationships.
3
Apply systems of equations to find unknown side lengths and angle measures.
System Warm-Up
Solve the system using the substitution method :
\[ y = 3x - 5 \] \[ x + y = 15 \]
Step 1: Substitute the first eq. into the second.
Step 2: Solve for \(x\).
Step 3: Find \(y\).

The Parallelogram "Big Six"
Opposite Sides
Both pairs are parallel AND congruent.
Opposite Angles
Both pairs are congruent (equal).
Consecutive Angles
Are supplementary (add to 180°).
Diagonals Bisect
They cut each other into equal halves.
Two Triangles
A diagonal splits it into two congruent triangles.
Sum of Interior
Always adds up to 360° total.

Angle Alliances
\( \angle A \)
\( 7z + 10 \)
\( 3z + 30 \)
\( \angle D \)
Find the value of \(z\), then calculate the measure of each angle in the parallelogram.

m∠C = ___
m∠D = ___
3
The Diagonal Duel (System Alert!)
Diagonals \(\overline{AC}\) and \(\overline{BD}\) of parallelogram \(ABCD\) bisect each other at point \(M\). If \(AM = x + 2y\), \(MC = 10\), \(BM = 2x - y\), and \(MD = 5\), find \(x\) and \(y\).
1. Setup System of Equations
2. Solve the System

ANSWER KEY & TEACHER GUIDE
1
The Side Scuffle
Solve for x
3x + 14 = 5x - 2
16 = 2x
x = 8
Solve for y
y + 8 = 2y - 4
12 = y
y = 12
2
Angle Alliances
Setup and solve for z
(7z + 10) + (3z + 30) = 180 (Consecutive Interior Angles)
10z + 40 = 180
10z = 140
z = 14
m∠A = 128°
m∠B = 52°
m∠C = 128°
m∠D = 52°
*Note: Opposite angles are congruent. Consecutive are supplementary.
3
The Diagonal Duel (System Alert!)
1. Setup System
(1) x + 2y = 10
(2) 2x - y = 5
2. Solve via Substitution/Elimination
From (2): y = 2x - 5
Sub into (1): x + 2(2x - 5) = 10
x + 4x - 10 = 10
5x = 20 → x = 4
y = 2(4) - 5 → y = 3
Teacher Insight: The "Angle 3" Moment
Encourage students to look back at Problem 2. Many will find z = 14 and stop. Remind them that in Geometry, the variable is often just a "key" to unlock the actual measure of the shape. This prepares them for the Exit Ticket.

Video Reflection: The "Angle 3" Moment
In the video, Justin solved for the variable k = -4. However, he didn't stop there. Explain why finding the variable isn't always the final answer in a geometry problem.
Quick Check: Setup Only
Write the equation you would use to solve for \(x\) in this parallelogram:
Opposite Angle: \(110^\circ\)
\(3x + 10\)
"Geometry is the foundation of all logic."

Lesson Flow
05M
Warm-Up: System Refresh
Students solve a simple system on the slide. Focus on the substitution method as it is most common in diagonal problems.
15M
Guided Viewing: Justin's Geometry
Play video (0:00 - 12:07). MANDATORY PAUSES:
5:16: Identify which expressions are set equal. Why? (Bisecting property).
7:44: Strategy check. Why solve for 'r' before 'k'?
11:10: Critical thinking: "Justin found k. Is he done?"
20M
Variable Ventures Activity
Students work independently or in pairs. Circulate for Problem 3 specifically; many students struggle with setting up systems from geometric diagrams.
10M
Exit Ticket & Wrap Up
Distribute the "Final Measure" ticket. Collect and use the data to identify students who still confuse consecutive (180°) vs. opposite (congruent) angles.
Misconception Watchlist
The "Everything is Equal" Trap
Students often default to setting expressions equal to each other regardless of the relationship. Emphasize "C-shapes" (consecutive) = 180.
Stopping at the Variable
Algebra brain tells them "x=5" is the goal. Geometry brain needs to plug that back in to find the physical length or degree.
