Jump Guide Lesson Plan
Jump Guide
Teacher Facilitation Guide • Addition: One More
Target Grade
Kindergarten
Objective
Students will practice adding 1 to numbers 1-10 to understand the concept of 'one more' as the next counting number.
Duration
45 - 60 Minutes
Includes video and movement activity.
Materials
- Number Hop Slides
- Lily Pad Number Cards
- Number Line Poster
- One More Leap Worksheet
Instructional Sequence
1
The Hook: Number Line Jump (5-10 mins)
Display the Number Line Poster or the slide with the number line. Ask students: "What happens when we jump one spot to the right?"
"If I'm standing on number 3 and I take one hop forward, where do I land? That's right, 4! Adding 1 is just like taking one hop forward."
2
Adding 1 Song (10 mins)
Play the first segment (0:00-2:15) of the 'Adding Songs' video. Encourage students to sing the chorus along with the blue character.
Teaching Moment:
Pause at [0:20]. Ask students: "Look at the numbers. What pattern do you see? What happens to the answer every time we add 1?" (The sum goes up by one each time).
3
Activity: 'One More' Jump (20-25 mins)
Place the Lily Pad Number Cards on the floor in order. Call on students to demonstrate the "One More" jump.
How to Play:
- Student stands on a number (e.g., 4).
- Class chants: "One more than 4 is..."
- Student jumps to the next card (5) and says: "4 plus 1 equals 5!"
- Repeat with different starting numbers and different students.
4
Reflection & Wrap-Up (5-10 mins)
Gather students back on the rug. Ask the big question:
"Is the answer always the next counting number when we add 1?"
Guide them to realize that adding 1 is the same as finding the number that comes "after" or "one more" in our counting sequence. Use the worksheet for independent practice or assessment.
For Extra Support
Use physical counters (like plastic frogs or cubes) to show 4 blocks, then add 1 more block and count them all together.
For Early Finishers
Challenge them to find "one more" for larger numbers like 20 or 50 on a hundred chart.
