Mission Briefing
1
The Hook: Roadside Observations (5 min)
Question: "Did anyone see a number on their way to school today? What was it doing?"
Tip: Encourage students to think about house numbers, speed limits, bus numbers, or digital clocks in cars.
2
Intelligence Gathering: Video (5 min)
Play the provided video starting from 2:33 (Real-World Applications).
Pause Point 2:40 (Road Sign): Ask: "Is this number counting objects like apples? No! What is it telling the driver?" (Distance/Measurement).
Pause Point 2:45 (Seed Packet): Ask: "How do numbers help a gardener?" (Time/Wait days).
3
Field Work: Scavenger Hunt (20 min)
Distribute the Detective Log and clipboards. Students work in pairs to find numbers in the classroom or hallway for these categories:
- Price: Scholastic flyers, lunch menus, book tags.
- Time: Clocks, schedules, timers.
- Order: Locker numbers, room numbers, page numbers.
- Quantity: Number of chairs, bin labels, posters.
4
Case Debrief: Final Analysis (5 min)
The Big Question: "What would happen if all the numbers disappeared from the grocery store?"
Expected answers: We wouldn't know the price. We wouldn't know when the food expires. We wouldn't know how much we are buying!
Support Strategy
Provide a "Found It" sticker sheet where students can match pre-printed numbers to their categories.
Extension Strategy
Challenge students to find a "multitasking" number that represents both a label (room number) and a quantity (seats inside).
