Estimated Time
50 Minutes
Focus Standard CCSS.MATH.K.CC.A.2 & K.CC.B.4c
Math Practice MP3 (Critique) & MP7 (Structure)
Target Outcome Order 1–10 & deduce unknown numbers
Essential Questions
How does knowing what comes before and after help us find a missing number?
Why does the order of numerals always remain predictable from 1 to 10?
Academic Vocabulary
Sequence Before After Between Unknown (?)
Phase 1
Launch: The Mystery Footprints (8 Min)
Whole Group Rug
Display a horizontal row of numeral cards 1 through 10. Hide cards 4 and 7 behind question-mark cards.
Teacher Prompt: "Detectives! Look at our trail: 1, 2, 3, [?], 5, 6, [?], 8, 9, 10. Someone hid two numbers! Let’s inspect the first clue."
Turn & Talk: "What number comes immediately after 3? Does that same number come immediately before 5? How can both clues be true at once?"
Phase 2
Explicit Modeling: Reasoning with Three Clues (14 Min)
Interactive Slides
Model three specific investigative tools to find any missing value without always starting back at 1:
1 The "After" Clue
Look at the numeral immediately to the left. Count one step forward: "After 6 is 7."
2 The "Before" Clue
Look at the numeral immediately to the right. Count one step back: "Before 8 is 7."
3 The "Between" Clue
Sandwich the unknown between both known anchors: "7 is trapped between 6 and 8."
Common Misconception Alert
Young learners often rely on "restarting at 1" every time. Encourage subitizing and counting-on by hiding numerals 1–3 and asking them to find the unknown starting from 5!

Phase 3
Partner Mission: "Case of the Missing Tile" (13 Min)
Pairs with Manipulatives
Student Roles & Rules:
Detective A: Lays out numerals 1–10, then turns away.
Detective B: Flips one card face down (the unknown).
Detective A: States the unknown using reasoning: "It is ___ because it comes after ___ and before ___."
Partners switch roles and repeat with 2 hidden cards.
Teacher Observation Check:
Are students reciting from 1 or using adjacent numerals?
Can students self-correct when reversing 6 and 9?
Do students verbalize the positional term "between" ?
Phase 4
Targeted Differentiation Pathways
Support / Scaffolding
Limit sequence to 1–5 first, then expand to 1–10 .
Provide a tactile 10-frame or bead rack to verify quantities visually.
Keep a reference number line visible on desk for checking.
Core / On-Level
Complete the Number Trail Worksheet independently.
Reason about unknown numbers in partial sequences (e.g., 4, __, 6).
Explain reasoning verbally or by circling clue numbers.
Extension / Challenge
Solve sequences with two unknowns (e.g., 3, __, __, 6).
Reverse detective work: "I am thinking of a number that is after 6 but before 9. What could it be?"
Create original mystery trail cards for peers.
Phase 5
Formative Assessment & Quick Check (8 Min)
Mystery Number Exit Ticket
Criteria Mastery (Level 3) Developing (Level 2) Needs Support (Level 1) Sequence Order (1–10) Writes 1–10 in accurate order without skipping or inversions. Orders 1–10 with 1 minor slip (e.g., skips 7 or reverses 6/9). Cannot order beyond 5 or exhibits frequent sequencing breaks. Reasoning About Unknown Correctly deduces unknown using neighbor cues (before/after). Finds unknown only by recounting from numeral 1 each time. Guesses randomly without reference to adjacent numbers.
🔍 Synthesis Debrief Questions (Rug Wrap-Up, 5 Min)
1. "If I only tell you that the mystery number is after 8 , do you know for sure what it is? Why or why not?"
2. "What if I tell you it is after 8 and before 10 ? Why does having two clues make the mystery number certain?"

Part 4
Detective Reasoning Check
Look at this mystery sequence: 4 , [ ? ] , 6. Why MUST the unknown number be 5? Fill in the bubble next to the best explanation:
Because 5 is 1 more than 4, and 5 is 1 less than 6.
Because 5 is the largest number on the whole page.
Because 5 comes immediately before the number 4.
