The Negative One Trick
Name
Date
Part 1: The Warm-Up
Evaluate the following expressions:
5 - 3 =
3 - 5 =
The Relationship:
How are the two answers related? What happens to the result when you flip the order of subtraction?
Part 2: Spot the Switch
Are these expressions Equal , Opposites (related by -1), or Unrelated ?
x - 4 vs 4 - x
Equal
Opposites
Unrelated
x + 7 vs 7 + x
Equal
Opposites
Unrelated
2z - 5 vs 5 - 2z
Equal
Opposites
Unrelated
Part 3: Simplify using the -1 Trick
Simplify each rational expression. Show the step where you factor out the negative one!
x - 9
9 - x
(x + 2)(x - 4)
(4 - x)(2x - 5)
3x + 2
-3x - 2
Extension Challenge
Create a "Wanted Poster" for the Negative One Trick. Illustrate how it transforms a factor and why it's the "Ultimate Algebraic Disguise."

The Secret Formula
(a - b)
=
-1(b - a)
Why does it work?
Think about the Distributive Property. If you multiply -1 back into the parentheses, you flip the signs!
-1(b - a)
-1b + 1a
a - b
The Simplification Shortcut
When you see opposites in a fraction, they don't cancel to 1... they CANCEL TO -1.
x - 4
4 - x
= -1
Watch Out!
This trick only works for subtraction. (x + 4) and (4 + x) are identical and cancel to 1.

Focus on how Justin handles the "4 - x" in the denominator.
Why does it work?
Algebraically, we can "flip" subtraction by factoring out a -1.
x - 4
is the same as...
-1(4 - x)
Prove it!
Original: x - 4
Factor -1: -1(-x + 4)
Rearrange: -1(4 - x)
The Simplification Shortcut
x - 4
4 - x
=
-1
When you cancel "opposites", you aren't left with nothing...
you are left with -1.
Try It Together
(3x + 2)(x - 4)
(-3x - 2)(x + 7)
Look closely!

The Negative One Trick
Pacing Guide
0-5 min
Warm-up: Students should realize that $5-3=2$ and $3-5=-2$. They are opposites! This is the core intuition.
5-15 min
Video: Focus on Example 2. Pause when Justin mentions "factoring out a negative."
15-25 min
Discussion: Use the "Proof" slide. Ask students if $x+4$ and $4+x$ are opposites (they are NOT, they are equal).
25-40 min
Activity: Students work on "Spot the Switch." Circulation is key here to catch sign errors.
Key: Part 2 (Spot the Switch)
x - 4 vs 4 - x Opposites (-1)
x + 7 vs 7 + x Equal (1)
2z - 5 vs 5 - 2z Opposites (-1)
Note: Students often confuse addition with subtraction. Remind them that addition is commutative ($a+b = b+a$), but subtraction is anticommutative ($a-b = -(b-a)$).
Key: Part 3 (Simplify)
Problem 01:
\( \frac{x-9}{9-x} = \frac{x-9}{-1(x-9)} = \mathbf{-1} \)
Problem 02:
\( \frac{(x+2)(x-4)}{(4-x)(2x-5)} = \frac{(x+2)(x-4)}{-1(x-4)(2x-5)} = \mathbf{\frac{-(x+2)}{2x-5}} \text{ or } \mathbf{\frac{x+2}{5-2x}} \)
Problem 03:
\( \frac{3x+2}{-3x-2} = \frac{3x+2}{-1(3x+2)} = \mathbf{-1} \)
Common Misconception
Students will often try to use the "trick" on expressions like \((x+5)\) and \((x-5)\). These are NOT related by -1. Only when the terms inside the subtraction are flipped (\(a-b\) and \(b-a\)) does the -1 trick apply.
