Act 1: Concrete Mystery Hook (Joining with Change Unknown)
Model & Engage
Place 7 counters visible on the double ten-frame. Hide 5 mystery counters under a cup. Say: "Sam has 7 apples. A friend brings more in this mystery cup. Now we have 12 in all! How many are hiding?"
Teacher action: Write 7 + [ ? ] = 12. Prompt students to fill the ten-frame from 7 up to 12 to find the missing part (5).
Min 3-8
Act 2: Guided Case Solving (Separating with Change & Start Unknown)
Guided Practice
Guide students to solve two contrasting problem types on their reusable Mystery Mats:
Case A • Separating (Change Unknown):
"14 birds on a branch. Some fly away. 8 remain."
14 - [ ] = 8 → [ 6 ]
Case B • Separating (Start Unknown):
"Some frogs were by a pond. 4 hopped away. 9 left."
[ ] - 4 = 9 → [ 13 ]
Min 8-12
Act 3: Detective Pairs (Hands-On Mat & Models)
Collaborative
Pairs solve mystery story cards using two-color counters and ten-frames. Emphasize verbalizing: "We started with ___. We joined/separated ___. Now we have ___."
Teacher circulates with the checklist: prompt students to point to which number represents the part vs. the whole .
Min 12-15
Act 4: Independent Evidence Check & Exit Ticket
Formative Check
Distribute the 2-problem Exit Ticket. Students independently model with pictorial drawings (circles or ten-frame dots) and complete the number sentence with the missing box.
Key Questioning Stems
• "Is the group getting bigger or smaller?" (Helps choose joining [+] or separating [-]).
• "Do we know the whole group or one of the parts?"
• "Where does our mystery question mark belong in the equation?"
Common Misconceptions
• Operation Blindness: Adding all numbers seen in the problem. Intervention: Act out the action with physical counters into a "take away" dish.
• Equals Sign as "The Answer": Confusing \(=\) with "do the math now". Intervention: Emphasize the balance scale metaphor: both sides must balance!
Exit Ticket Quick Scoring Rubric
2 Total Problems • 100% Mastery Target
Ready to Advance (2/2):
Correctly draws pictorial model & puts correct missing term in the box. Explains whether term is a part or whole.
Approaching (1/2):
Solves joining problem correctly but struggles with start-unknown separating problem. Continue concrete ten-frame mats.
Targeted Support (0/2):
Adds given numbers indiscriminately. Schedule 1:1 ten-frame re-engagement with physical story mats.

Action: Start Missing [ ? ]
There were some frogs resting on a log.
5 frogs hopped away into the cool water.
Now 8 frogs are still on the log.
🔍 Clue: How many frogs were on the log at first?
Detective Reasoning:
To find the whole group at the beginning, put the two parts back together!
8 still here + 5 hopped away = 13 at first!
13
− 5 = 8
When the start is unknown, add the parts to find the whole! Slide 4 of 5
